checking ATF fluid, refilling ATF

It seems that the ATF dipstick tube takes some bends in most cars. These bends wipe against the dipstick and smear the ATF fluid on one side of the dipstick. So do most people just look at both sides of dipstick and use the side that does not appear to be smeared?

So the ATF should be drained hot or cold or does not matter?
When refilling, how much to add? There is a cold and hot mark on dipstick, but they are with engine running. I guess one could measure how much was drained, but a pain if I use a general purpose catch pan, that may have some leftover oil, etc.

I check both sides on mine and it's typically at the same location. Be sure to wipe/check it 2-3 times to make sure.

It's easiest to measure the amount drained so you won't add too much or too little. I prefer to do drains when it's cold, unless the drain is going to be followed by a flush, then do it hot/warm.

yeah check two or three times. yeah you get smear sometimes but just check a few times for consisency.. make sure your car is running. esp after a good drive will give the most accurate results in testing the atf level
