i have a commercial heavy construction customer with a ford truck 4.6 that just needed an engine overhaul these guys run these things until the wheels rot off.. Well he uses ONLY cheap 5w30 he buys anywhere it is on sale cheap (he has a shop for his fleet on his property) this engine overheated bad and warped the heads and it let anti freeze into the oil.. he changes oil every 5 months and whatever mileage. On the front floor i saw a quart of S.T. a quart of sears and a mobil quart( he gets the sears cheap from a friend) This engine was not the cleanest inside and burned a little oil but was not so bad either i did make a comment to him that he should change the oil with one brand and do it every 5 months or 5000 miles,,, He said to me why and i said it would be better for the engines he said this one has one of the lowest miles some of the others have more The mileage is 335,993 ... he has one that has 400+ running good... He said cheap oil is just as good as the expensive stuff because it saves him money... I could not argue with him his equipment lasts forever on the cheapest oil.. Some say oil is oil i may be one of them soon

Perhaps correct (when OCIs are under 5k and assuming a non-sludger). But I have this hunch that if you run 5k OCIs on ST dino and PYB - then at 100k the PYB is going to be cleaner - though perhaps not in a way that makes any difference to longevity.

(?)

There is little difference in quality between brand names if OCI is about 6-7k miles or less, if you extend OCI to 10-15k then it is another story, at that long OCI almost no dino will do as good as a brand name syn.

If his oci is every 5 months and he is using whatever i.e supertech , sears brand then he is not doing a bad job. He probably has alot going on and those motors aren't one of them. As long as those oils are API IlSAC rated they should perform as well as a name brand oil i.e PYB,VWB,MC. So maybe he is right oil is oil .

My dad has taken one car over 325K miles, a couple more past the 280K mark, and yet another past 250K in the past decade. All the cars were bought used, and we ran Havoline dino with OCI's every 3-5K miles. Not the cheapest oil out there, but you see where I am going... No "high end" oils or supplemental additives involved. Granted these were all passengers car and a van, not work trucks.

True, and what many people don't seem to realize is that you can't take a brand named syn and blindly run it 10-15k. There is no magic oil, and there is no substitute for regular maintenance, including reasonable OCIs with whatever oil you choose.

It goes to show you, what i always believe here in the North East, it's not the brand of oil that will kills your car but the elements. i.e. Rust. Most of my cars die of rust then a blown engine.

That's the purpose of API/ILSAC qualifications. They at least assures minimum oil quality for people who drive sanely and conscientiously keep up with their oil changes. Always look for the API starburst on the bottle.
