Chat GTP

Writing this reply.

In all seriousness, haven't used GPT yet but I have messed around with Notebook LM and that was useful for searching multiple documents (procedures manuals) quickly and efficiently.

I ask it before googling on software dev issues, it won't get you all the way home (unless you're asking it the most basic questions) but it will point you in the right direction most of the time.

Started writing javafx the other day and its been very useful.

I use Deep Seek instead. I think it's more refined - Chat GPT has been inadequate for my needs.

I use it for crafting letters, Excel macros and general inquiries.

I seem to be spending a lot of time correcting bad info people get, who send it to me for confirmation, than using it myself.

It is definitely handy in software development stuff.

Nothing. I've been actively avoiding. I'm not convinced that AI will do anything other than making us dumber.

[Ok some could be helped. I'm not saying the tech is evil. But if I have to use AI in order to write this reply... let alone anything more complicated... then I'm doomed as a human.]

I do fear that we will see literacy rates go down with over-dependence on AI.

NOTE ...

You may discuss AI, but do not post AI content, as BITOG policy prohibits posting AI generated content.
Do NOT post stuff here unless you, a human being, wrote the text. Do NOT post examples from any AI generated source.

You may continue.
I've never seen dnewton3 and AI in the same room at the same time.

Just sayin'

What are you guys using it for?
Absolutely nothing.

It's garbage and it's being kept on life support via injected debt-fueled binge spending by Microsoft in order to help Microsoft pump their stock based on a speculative bubble.

It gets simple interest calculations wrong and it fails to understand even the most straightforward examples of C source code I've shown it. For example, it suggested using less magic numbers in a specification that demands the use of magic numbers.

Apparently Ford uses some sort of ChatGPT to write the source book for new vehicle info on the Expedition.

It's truly horrifying that Crap GPT is popping up in some form everywhere.

Indiana's legislature uses it to summarize the proposed bills, and risk getting it wrong. Which is not important when you're passing laws that affect people's lives I suppose. Some city councils are now using them to write proposed ordinances. Who will proofread this? After all, you can fire a secretary or clerk here and there.

Walmart fills up your screen space with chatbots when you're just trying to buy cat littler.

Car lots have them and nobody gets back to you. They frustrate potential buyers and people trying to book service.

LLMs are on fire because people figure there will be a cost savings from firing people but it's going to backfire massively.

If the stupid thing can't even correctly interpret an ISO specification with demonstration source in ANSI C that I understood and was making contributions to when I was 14 years old, it's not going to replace professionals.

Lawyers have already been sanctioned for filing court documents with citations for legal precedents that don't actually exist.

You are entitled to your opinion. But its here to stay and will only get better.

That's actually not that easy to do. Just training it on a lot of "tokens", much of which is unverified garbaaaage from wikipedia, stackexchange, and reddit, and trying to hack it together to catch corner cases will never make it reliable.

People who actually understand nothing about how the code works think it's amazing and some even unwisely invest there, but they're being fed a line.
