So I bit the bullet on my beater '93 altima and am sinking some coin into it under the auspice that it will not rust out for another 5-8 years or so.

I last did the manual transmission oil change around 100K/10 years ago. Does it make sense to even change the oil at this point? If so, is there a cheap alternative to the recommended GP-4 oils, like dexron III for example? I do mostly highway driving. Thanks, Bill

It wont hurt anything to change the fluid after all this time, it will help. If you plan on keeping it for 5 or more years then I suggest on putting GL4 in the transmission.

I'd change it. It doesn't work like an automatic, so you shouldn't see any ill effects from changing it out.

I would stick with GL-4 fluid though. I put Redline MT-90 in my Nissan and loving it. Not sure you'd have to go that far, but any standard GL-4 fluid should last the rest of the useful life of that car.

I drove a 94 once. I love the old Altimas. Great cars.

I`d only use a specific GL4 manual transmission fluid in 75W90 weight. Only ones I know of are Redline MT90 (Jegs),Amsoil MTG (from a site sponsor here),or Nissan 75W85 MTF (from any Nissan dealer). I think Ford dealers carry a GL4 75W90 as well.
