Sorry for the newbie question, but is this possible for me? I've been researching for a few weeks and am really liking the Amsoil 2000 series oils that recc. changing the filter but not the oil twice a year or so.

Is there really enough room to do this--assuming all the oil is in the pan? I've got a 98 Corolla and a 2000 Odyssey. Both filters hang upside-down vertically. I'd hate to lose any of this elixir in the process...

All you need to do is change the filter, discard the old filter and whatever oil you loose in accordance (LOL) with state and local laws, then just add some new oil to bring the level back up to full.

I just find it hard to wrap my noodle around the fact that the pan is deep enough to hold all of that oil without losing 3 quarts in the filter.

I'm assuming any left-over oil in the filter is trash, right?

The small import filters probably hold about a cup of oil. So all the rest sets in the pan when the engine is off. What comes out of the filter will be pretty dirty, so just toss it and top off the oil.

tenorgj,

Changing the oil and not the oil at 6 months in a one year OCI is what Amsoil recommends. By changing the filter in the middle you are getting rid of insolubles. The Amsoil oil filter is an excellent product but cost $10-$12.00 a piece. Amsoil tends to thicken out of grade on long intervals.

If you used the Amsoil SK2 0w-30, one Amsoil SDF filter, and lube control, you could go 10K miles and possibly 15k miles since that is Amsoil's ultra premium oil. Changing the filter in the middle of the OCI is a pain. I would only go the longer distance by go the 10k first and having oil analysis done and review by a good lab. The economics work better over 3 OCIs with the use of LC instead of expensive oil filters.

Changing the filter serves two purposes.

Purpose one, a new filter. Do I have to explain this one?

Purpose two, it allows you to give the oil in your car a booster shot basically. A 1/2 quart or so of fresh oil to replenish all the additives and this and that and the little magic elves in the oil that make it so wonderful.

Sorry guys, I've been spraying starting fluid all afternoon cleaning up the bottom of my crown vic so if it continues to leak after the new oil cooler lines are on I'll be able to find it and go nuts and destroy whatever is leaking. Ether....good stuff.

Just go to Wal*Mart and buy their SuperTech 10w30 oil and ST filter. Change them both at 4,000 miles and forget about it. Both vehicles will still be running fine when you are sick and tired of them.

Happy motoring!

ROFLMAO!!!! Good one! Exactally my sentiments

In line with what Ugly said, if I crawl under the car and take the filter off, the oil is coming out too.

I know this is no fun for a mad scientist with an extended OCI fixation.

My filter can be taken out easily from above. No crawling on the ground for this guy.

...Sorry bub but the title of "elixer" has been given to another oil,so please refrain from using this term when refering to any other oil than GC..

TenorG3-
Sounds like your concern is having all the oil in the pan run out if you take off the filter. It won't--unless someone turns on the engine while the filter is off.

Acquaintance got some more oil from me at Oshkosh air show this year. He is a goldsmith, not an auto technician. Said he really liked the AMSOIL, but his wife thought there had to be a better way than draining out all the oil into a clean pan, changing the filter, and putting the oil back in -----

I think for S2K AMSOIL 0/30 to make it a year with a good UOA I feel at 6 mo.or 5000 miles you should change the filter and top it off with clean S2K oil. That pint of oil and somewhat dirty filter makes the difference I think Pablo said this too.
