Hey everyone, I changed out the spark plugs yesterday at 157k. OEM densos in dealer packaging. Last known work on the engine was indicated by a marking on the fuse box with "tune-up 65k" which may or may not have included the plugs. Otherwise I have no idea about previous maintenance. There was a weird ticking noise that went away after I put the new plugs in. It could have been coming from the PCV hose which I put a zip tie on because the old clamp wasn't tight enough.

Heres what the Autolites looks like after ??? miles.

Is there anything wrong with the engine by looking at the plugs? When I pulled the plugs there was a lot of black grime that I wasn't able to clean because most of it would have gone into the cylinder. Left it undisturbed. Also all of the plugs went in easy with the rubber hose about 1/4 to 2 turns. I then tightened them with a torque wrench. One of the plugs took more power to torque down at the end. They all have little gaskets and I put very very little antiseize. Did I cross thread or was it a tough gasket, or the grime? Its got me worried

Autolite isn't good in any car.Low quality Chinese and Mexican [censored].

Denso and NGK are the only companies that still know how to make spark plugs.

I'm running Autolite Iridiums in my 2007 Tacoma V6. Went with the iridiums because I didn't want to worry about changing plugs every 30K with the OEM-spec copper plugs. No problems in 4 years and over 80,000 mi.

Where do you get that info. Have you tried those other brands?
I recently put into my 03 Ford Focus at 105,000....new Autolite Plats....and they have worked perfectly for the last 30K. IMO they... should be good for another 100K or so.

Probably dirt or carbon on the threads. I like to run a spark plug thread chaser before installing new plugs and it removes a significant amount of dirt from the threads. It makes threading and torquing new plugs smooth as butter.

Thank you Kibitoshen and Luke. When I have a lot more experience I'll try to run a thread chaser. And only the best for this car!

Nothing wrong with Autolites and I've had great results with their Platinum, Double Platinum and XP iridiums like you had. All I use now are Autolites. NGK and Denso are fine also. I've actually only had 1 spark plug that didn't work right for me and that was the Bosch +4 plug.

Autolite aren't inherently bad per se, but it's not my first choice either - I'd pick them over a Bosch non-OE design. The plugs look good otherwise.

At least Autolite stepped up its game since the last time I used them. I used Autolite platinum in my Honda Accord. They went for the full 60,000 miles (it was an 89 Accord). Back then they had a black coating, almost like the bluing on a gun. The exposed metal portion rusted. It didn't affect the performance, but seemed cheesy compared to the competition. I used almost every brand you can think of in that car - I had it for 23 years and 350,000 miles. Champion (came with them from the factory in Ohio), Autolite, Bosch, Denso, NGK, Split Fire (clearance at KMart), and E3 (just to see if there was anything to them). They all worked fine and none seemed better than the others.

I have the Autolite Ird's in my Focus and they have performed very well.

The Autolites I use are made in USA and last over 100K miles in my Escort just fine.

That's an ignorant statement.

+1 nothing wrong with Autolite they are a good plug. Over the last 40+ years I have used almost every brand at some point. Contrary to all the internet horror stories the only truly DOA plug I ever got was a AC Delco back in the 70's, i remember it well.
