Change oil filter every other oil change?

But I like to change my oil and filter, so the filter comes off when the oil comes out. I can tell myself its cheap insurance, but I actually like the extra time it takes to change the filter. I like purchasing the oil and filters, and selecting the "best" combination for my foreseeable driving conditions. Its hard enough not changing the oil every 3k, like i used to. Don't take away more of my fun by not changing the filter. I think its more "cheap entertainment" rather than "cheap insurance", for me anyway.

You won't be doing anything wrong, either way you go. Leaving the filter on for 2x OCI isn't going to cause your engine to grenade the moment you put it in drive. Paying an extra $5.00 (if that) isn't going to break the bank either. Its less than one trip to McDonald's per OCI. I'm sure we've all spent more money, more foolishly.

The original question was not about money. The question was if changing the oil filter out every other OCI was better. How much filtering is really taking place? By this "logic" I should only buy Shell Premium gasoline because it has more cleaning additives than regular. Now what sacrifice should I make for myself in the the name of protecting a machine? Should I not buy my weekly dinner of fresh Salmon and buy it canned? Yeah Honda is so concerned about saving its customers money and losing some money by not selling Honda brand oil filters to compromise reliability so Honda can lose more money?

Changing the filter every other OCI was standard years ago.
Or at least very common.
[But oil changes were more frequent.]
I now often let the filter ride while changing the oil.
I figure if cars can go 10,000 miles+ on a new oil fill, why cant I go around 8,000 on one filter [with whatever oil changes]?
Cars run cleaner than before. Large particles that the oil filter catches are few, compared to the umpteen jillion that the oil itself holds in suspension.

My point wasn't about money either. It was about doing what you want to do.

I used myself as an example of why I change both every time. Your reasons for doing what you do may vary.

In my opinion, there is no difference between leaving your filter on for 2x oci, and changing it every time except for the cost. I believe the cost is a non-factor, so I don't consider it during my decision making.

I change mine on my Ford (Duratec 3.0) every other oil change. I don't know why, but this engine in particular seems to drain the oil pump almost completely when I change the filter. The result is the oil pressure like staying on for what seems like an eternity and a horrible racket on the first start.

I've cut open every filter, and even after 130K miles they look like they're barely used. Most Honda engines are equally easy on oil. If you know the maintenance history of the car and you know the engine is clean, I'd re-use the filter. I don't really understand the "cheap insurance" thing, since the filter you'll be installing will be just as likely to have a problem as the one you're removing?

I have cut open a few filters recently and I have been impressed by how well they hold up -- even the STP with 9k miles on it!! I will probably start using my filters for dual OCI's from now on.

We can agree that everyone on this site is more fanatical about oils, car maintenance, cars, trucks, filters and ect. But to make a comparison of your life to your engines oil filter is pretty ridiculous.

One our cars is a 1996 Avalon. For the past three years I've been changing the oil filter every other oil change. The car isn't worth much and is our spare car. I really don't think it hurts anything. Now on a $30k + car I wouldn't cheap out.

Why NOT do it? $3.50 and 5 minutes too much? I can't see any benefit of not changing it other than the money and small amount of time, but that doesn't out way the piece of mind a clean filter will provide.

It will make no difference in engine longevity. Your warranty will still be intact. Do whatever lets you sleep at night (as you can see from above posts).

Some extensive studies have demonstrated that changing the filter every other oil change results in better filtration because filters get more efficient with use, up to a point of course. VW, Chrysler, MB? and one other were part of the long term study. I would therefore follow the manufactures recommendation rather than some self-appointed-expert. Ed Hayes

I'm approaching 20k miles (3 OCI's) on an oversized Purolator with about 85% highway miles.

Clean, fresh oil you keep your engine running great for many years. I do NOT buy into all the beta ratio arguments.

Agree....those are the studies I read as well.

IMO....Using a quality filter (not the junk they supply at JiffyLube or even the stealerships) should be able to go two 5K to 7.5K easily. By quality, I don't mean the expensive ($10 to $15) filters....but the mid-tier filters such as PureOnes, Wix, Bosch Preminums, Napa Gold, and Fram Ultra, all costing below $9.

I have a '06 S2000 and I use a oversize oil filter(Baldwin B7042), I go 7.5k miles on the oil and change the oil filter every other oil change.

why not change oil every week?
the change from every other time in 60s and 70s to every time was done without any scientific study, it just happens cause people think its better- no science.
I do every other

You will still be able to prime the filter a little just not as much, I do this on 6.6 Duramax's at work with horizontal filter, Also I would just change the filter every time, if I remember that's a 4612 filter which is pretty small anyway, or is it the bigger 4459 filter? Still I would change it every time with a oem one.
