Change oil filter every other oil change?

The maintance schedule for my 2010 Civic Si says the oil filter should only be changed every other oil change. We've all been groomed to think that you should always change the oil and filter simultaneously, but is it really better? Or is it better to leave the filter in there and prevent the engine from starting dry? You could cut the extra dry starts after oil changes in half.

BTW my filter fits horizontally, so I can't fill it before putting it on the engine.

IMO...it all depends on the condition of the engine, type and brand of filter and the individuals driving conditions.

Clean engine....free of sludge and dirt... YES
M1, Bosch D+, K&N, Fram Extended Guard, Tough Filter to handle the dirt and distance etc....Yes.
Non Severe Driving conditions....Yes

IMO...you can use either Conventional or Synthetic. Most of the high end filters are built to go the distance. In some cases the oil filter is built to go 15K or more on an extended drain oil. So if you have 3 OCI, with clean oil in a clean engine every 5K on Dino.....it is very possible to go the distance.

"Viewer Discretion is Advised".....these are just my personal opinions.

+1 Change with every oil change. Oil filters are cheap enough that it's not worth the possibility of clogging a filter and having to deal with the outcome.

I may be the only one, but I change the filter every other change. Had close to 350K on our Camry and that plan is doing well on our RX330 with 160K (I run 5K on oil and 10K on the filter). Of course, it can't hurt to do it with each oil change, but it certainly won't hurt to leave it on. My $.02.

I don't half the OCI recommended by the mfg, why do it with the filter. Cheap insurance? Against what? If a new car clogs a filter in 5-10K, there are going to be issues, new filter or not.

Lots of supposition, emotions and very little hard evidence here.

Honda on the other hand has lots of backing engineering and R&D time to support their claim.

Lets see. Honda's reputation is that Honda makes some of the most reliable engines in the world because it is Honda. Honda operates on a very slim margin auto sales wise. Honda is not nearly as big as Toyota or GM. So do you believe with everything Honda has going for it and the potential outcome that could happen if Honda is all the sudden perceived of having some of the least reliable engines made? Would Honda in all its research and risk its products identity to save you 4-5 dollars on a oil change only to have its engine fail prematurely?

Honda wouldn't recommend it if it were harmful to your engine. Do it unless you have a specific 'use' reason not to.

Agree.

No brainer! new oil,new filter

Personally, I don't think you'll be doing any damage by changing the filter every other oil drain. Like many people have posted, Honda wouldn't recommend it if there was the slightest possibility it was harmful.

But I like to change my oil and filter, so the filter comes off when the oil comes out. I can tell myself its cheap insurance, but I actually like the extra time it takes to change the filter. I like purchasing the oil and filters, and selecting the "best" combination for my foreseeable driving conditions. Its hard enough not changing the oil every 3k, like i used to. Don't take away more of my fun by not changing the filter. I think its more "cheap entertainment" rather than "cheap insurance", for me anyway.

You won't be doing anything wrong, either way you go. Leaving the filter on for 2x OCI isn't going to cause your engine to grenade the moment you put it in drive. Paying an extra $5.00 (if that) isn't going to break the bank either. Its less than one trip to McDonald's per OCI. I'm sure we've all spent more money, more foolishly.

But they catch more if they're loaded up.

+1....I believe I read here, or somewhere....that it takes 2 to 3K miles...for the filter to be most efficient.

I thats true...those 3K OCI people who change filters each time they change oil, are actually causing more wear by changing their filter out each oil change.
