Change it or not? 2021 Accord 1.5T

If you ask on this forum.... nine out of ten replies will be to change the oil no matter what circumstances you give.
Not really, If the engine was well beyond the break-in period I would say let it ride. He has the TG filter which is good to 10K at least and Edge synthetic oil which is good for 10K at least and he would be pushing it only to less than 8K after his trip. Then It would be fine.

Less than 20K miles I consider still in the break-in period so I would save myself some minor worry about particles getting lodged or abrading surfaces as time passes.

2021 Accord 1.5T. I bought it in December, changed the factory fill in May at about 7500 miles with Castrol Edge 0W-20 & Fram TG. It's now at about 12K, 50% on the MM. The plan is to drive from Chicago to central Florida, so at least 2500 miles round trip, probably 3000 when all is said and done. I'm sure the MM would be fine with a 7500 mile OCI, with plenty of highway miles, but what does BITOG think?
It's not my car, but I'm on the fence on this one.
Is it Gold Bottle Edge?
How does the engine sound and how does the oil smell and blotter?
If it smells OK and blotters OK and its Gold bottle - I'd leave it with no worries.

I trust the honda algorithm. I'd let it ride.
The algorithm is probably more geared towards once the engine is fully broken in though. I always like to err on the side of caution when an engine is new and change it more frequently than the oil life monitor would indicate. I didn't start following the oil life monitor in my Corvette until the third oil change. I did the first oil change at 1100 miles and then did the second one after about another 2 or 3000 miles.

Honda requests you leave the break in sump in for the full duration and tells you to follow the MM.

The dealer will tell you not to change early. Reason being is the break in sump is rich in moly from the assembly lube and it aids in break in.

This particular sump being sump # 2 still has a mix of break in oil in it, and as such I'd leave it in the full duration.

As a person who lives in central Florida, ride the oil here and change before you leave to go back home if you can. Heat index here right now is over 100 so the oil will get a good work out.

My plan would be to change out the Edge with Kirkland 0W-20 full syn that I have on hand, leave the filter alone, and not reset the MM. Then change it again, with filter when the MM called for the next change. Then I'm set for the winter. The sump on the car is 3.5 qts., which seems tiny for a 1.5 turbo capable of 192HP. Almost 10,000 miles seems to be asking a lot of 3.5 quarts of oil in a turbo. So I'm leaning toward changing it.

Sounds like a good plan, but I would do the filter at this change anyway, especially on a ‘newer’ engine.
I’ve said it a thousand times before, I just don’t get doing all the work in an oil change - up on ramps, drain pan out, under to open drain plug….and not doing the filter while you are there!
But that’s just me.

If that 1.5 is DI without port injection, I wouldn't venture any farther than 5000 miles. Que the dirty valves

I have a GM 1.5t and took a trip from NY to Charleston to Western VA and back, about 2000miles at mostly hwy speed 75. I change the oil before I went OLM was at 51%. When I got home my OLM was down to 63% a loss of 37%. If your at 50% now you might have to change when your in FL

What's the oci on your user manual? If the long trip doesn't exceed that you should be good to go, given no excuse for dealer to deny your warranty.
I'm a short oci guy so I'd prefer change it.

I ran into the same problem with a Hyundai Kona. From Arkansastan to WA state, and back. 1.6L Turbo. Changed it before the trip. If it were NA, I prolly woulda left it, but that turbo heat killing the oil woulda bothered me the whole trip Knowing I would've been going beyond the change interval.

Me too, If i go through all that.

That why I have a topside oil changer though.

It's a 15 minute job to do an "A" (no FCI) oil change without getting under the car or even dirty.

I changed it with the Kirkland 0W-20, no filter. The old oil came out black. More so than I'm used to seeing on other cars. DI soot? I certainly don't feel like I changed it too early. It was at about 12,400 and 40% on the MM, so 5K on the oil. Thanks to BITOG for the good advice!
