I just bought the Z-1 ATF from my local honda dealter at $6/q. They're more expensive than ordering from internet but I don't have to pay shipping costs. Of course, the dealer here charges $70 for drain and refill ATF.

Would like your comment about how many drain&fill you guys recommend for 30k miles of 2005 Accord 4cyc? I bought 6 q for 2 intervals but deciding between
1) change twice within one week (~ 250mile); or
2) change once at 30K and again at 45K.

Thanks,

I think it has the filter, but I don't think I could change it myself. I don't think the manual requires changing the trans filter. Is it necessary for this early miles?

By the way, this would be its first ATF change.

Since you're already at 30k, do a change now and again next week to get rid of most of the old fluid.

Then, a simple drain/refill once a year or every 10k is plenty good.

30k isn't early miles. So, if the filter is easy enough to replace and not too expensive, then replace it now and every 30k.

I have an '03 MDX Touring. Because of Honda/Acura's miserable history with its trannies I do a 3 quart change every-other oil change. This is about twice per year. Keeps relatively clean fluid in the tranny, keeps costs down, and is relatively easy to do while I'm under it changing the oil. No filter on the MD's tranny so that's not an issue. I buy my fluids at Honda rather than Acura which also keeps costs down. Works for me. Good luck to ya.

I will go for unDummy's route. Get rid of as much old Z1 in your tranny now, change the filter (fairly easy for the I4 transmission), and then do a drain/refill every 10-15K miles. These transmissions really like clean fluid.

The question would be are you trying to freshen the fluid or get most of the old fluid out. If you only want to freshen the fluid and the old fluid was decent, then maybe 15K. If the old fluid was in [censored] shape and you want it replaced by new fluid, then very few miles between changes (like 1 hour of driving).
