Hi All;

I use a Jabsco oil extractor to change my oil. It's time to change the ATF in my 02 Accord v6 and I'm wondering if it's OK to use the oil extractor down the ATF dipstick to remove the ATF? I just like the fact that I don't have to crawl under the car and there's no chance of spillage.

Thanks for your help.

It's pretty easy to change it via the drain bolt under the car. I think it's easier than changing the oil. Also, it's not messy at all. Just one tip, leave the tranny dip stick in or the ATF will come shooting out.

i agree. i changed my accord tranny fluid via bolt and it was super easy. i didn't even have to jack up the car. although be aware of that fill bolt. i think my mechanic over tighten it or something but it took a 1 foot extension and a super long pipe i used as a break bar to remove it.

Dorkie- where is the fill bolt? Is it that huge unmarked bolt on a case that has a couple of wires attached?

There is no fill bolt on an auto transmission. You use the dipstick tube. There is a DRAIN bolt.

Actually on my '00 3.2TL (which I suspect uses the same transmission as the '02 AV6), there is a fill bolt on top of the transmission; it's where the retrofit oil jet is installed. Since my car has the extra plumbing attached I just fill using the dipstick hole.

Do not use an extractor on a Honda transmission. It's important to use the drain bolt as the plug is magnetic. There will be many metal filings and "sludge" stuck onto the magnet. The transmissions in the 98-02 Accords are known for frequent failures so consider yourself warned. Fluid changes don't seem to help at all.

There IS a fill bolt on Honda V6 transmissions.

Yours is a 5-speed, so if it's one of the pre-revision units it will have the oil jet. You should still refill using the fill hole if you have the oil jet. The oil jet can be removed by removing the 12mm (?) bolt that holds down the oil jet and lifting out the assembly. Then you'll see a hollow bolt that you'll have to remove as well.

The Critic is correct. There IS a fill bolt on the V6. IIRC, it is a 11/16 or 17mm bolt that has the word ATF on it. Should be located on the driver side.

Dorkie- You're a rock star. Thanks for taking time to snap a shot and post it. I really appreciate it.

I was afraid this was the fill bolt in question.

That $%@%^(&E#! bolt is on there so tight I'll need a gorilla that can bench press 500 lbs. to get it off.

This is precisely the reason I fill through the dipstick hole

Just use a 1/2" drive impact socket of the correct size and a 25" breaker bar. That's will get it off...at least it worked for me.
