Is it ok to run tcw3 2 cycle outboard motor oil in air cooled chain saw? Is there such a thing as universal 2 stroke oil?

tcw3 is in general a big no in air cooled hot running engines such as a chainsaw you want a oil rated FD

The Lawn-Boy two-stroke lawn mower is the only air-cooled engine engine I know of that recommended using a TCW3 oil. Lawn-Boy probably specified it for it's ashes properties. Plus it could get away with it because of the 3600 RPM's at most, large cooling fan and a 32:1 ratio. If you have a Home Depot close by, Echo two-stroke oil is rated FD.

I know its not right but I've used it from time to time and I haven't had any problems. Sure there would be some sort of long term implications though. Its just too tempting when you need some 2-stroke gas and have quarts of tcw-3 sitting on the shelf.

I purchased a chainsaw in 1986 and have used lightly every year. Total of about 100 hours. The only oil it has ever seen is TCW-3. Took it apart recently for cleaning. Removed the plug and exhaust/muffler. Held it up in the sun and could easily see the chrome bore/piston and rings. Looked like a mirror. Absolutely spotless. Not one spec of dirt/carbon. I mix the oil about 40:1.

For a cheaper saw like the ones I have I wouldn't have a problem with TCW-3. For a high dollar one, I'd use OEM or similar.

Thanks, I used a little this weekend at the fish camp to saw down a dead mulberry tree. I will get the FD oil and keep it up there for future use. Thanks again.
