Hello All,

Had a CEL go off in my 2000 Audi A6 with a 2.8L V6. Had AAP read the code and it was a P0441-Evaporator Purge code.

Not sure what to do about this one or where to start looking. I try to take care of most of the maintenance on my cars myself. Anyone have any thoughts on what to look at, or different tips/similar experiences? If it helps I just did an oil change and changed the air filter with a Mann unit about 200 miles before the code, but that does not seem like it would have caused this particular code.

Thanks in advance!

That is a code for incorrect purge flow. Part of the Evaporative Emissions system. It opens and closes allowing fuel vapors from the tank to cycle up to the intake to be burned, rather than allowing them to escape into the environment. Either your purge valve is stuck open or closed, or there is an electrical issue in the wiring to it or the connector. Most likely stuck.

First step is to buy a new gas cap. If that does not solve the problem then you have to look for a hole in a rusted fill neck on the gas tank, or if it has a metal gas tank possibly the top of the gas tank has a rust hole. If that is not the problem it could be a bad check valve on the line under the hood.

There is a smoke test system that most auto repair shops have and will use to find the leak. Expect to spend about a hundred on labor and parts to have a shop fix the problem.

After doing some research the Vapor Canister Purge Valve it appears that it is mounted directly on the lid to the air box which I just opened to replace the air filter. I removed it from its mount prior to installing the filter and placed it back as it was found. I'm going to check the lines for leaks, kinks, electrical etc.

Barring that, do you think jostling the Valve could have caused it so fail?

Absolutely it could have. It might not be the valve, it could be leaking vacuum hose going to it. These are pretty common fail items on Ford's and Mazda's.

I just had the code cleared. Had to take it to an independent mechanic since AAP would not clear it for me. We'll see if the code comes back. I found a loose connection at the the purge valve. Hopefully this takes care of the problem!
