I have a Hampton Bay ceiling fan which the remote control receiver inside the canopy base just died recently. It is a 7067FM model and I can either replace it with

a generic universal (yellow one on amazon) for around $30,

the same 7067 module for around $50-60,

or a Lutron wall control kit for around $55.

The universal one seems to have good review and may even be identical inside as the 7067FM from Hampton Bay, and I'm not sure if the Hampton bay unit is good quality or not as it last only about 7 years. I would like to try the wall control kit from Lutron so I don't have to deal with the hand held remote like the others, and from my understanding Lutron is a good quality brand, but I'm not sure if it is actually the case or if it is just a perception.

Any recommendation?

I just set my fans to the middle setting and let it go at that, works great

Another question:

How much work would it be to "fish" an additional wire from the ceiling fan base to the switch so I can use a hard wired light on/off + ceiling fan speed controller?

Apparently there's no pull string on the ceiling fan to control the speed or the light, it is only remote controlled.

As long as the universal one has good reviews it'll all be the same CH made cheapo stuff. Lutron stuff works I've never had one go bad on lighting rheostat controls.

Mine broke in a ceiling fan. I order a replacement part. I would suggest you order a replacement part unless you take it apart and check out if there is room and a way to mount a control board than the original. You may have have to fool with connectors to the circuit board also.

I installed a remote control eliminator on my bedroom ceiling fan. It's now controlled by a switch on the wall and required no batteries and never gets lost or misplaced.

Hampton Bay has a 1-800 customer service line where you can order a new exact replacement remote for reasonable money. Many generic remotes being sold will not work. Way better to get an exact replacement.
