Well, with the M1 sale a couple weeks ago I bit the bullet and picked up some 0w40. Dropped in at the Toyota dealer this week and got a corresponding 5 liters of 0w20. Was going to start with a simple mix at 50/50 but just realized that I got SM not SN, which is a bit thinner. So I might try closer to 60/40 Toyota/M1 which should give me about a 10.5 100c with a 204 VI. This is compared to the PC 0w30 in the G6 now at 11.2 & 177.

10 liters total is enough for one change for each car but I may have to do two on the G6 before the OLM goes off in the G5. At any rate I'll be watching for the next sale and pick up more M1.

After CATERHAM set out this mix, I was thinking it would work well in my Tribute...
 
Cool. I've been thinking of doing a blend myself but am going to run straight Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20 first.
 
I like the Petro-Canada oil! Just curious where are you buying it? I get mine from the gas station. I hate the price there but I love the oil!

There are dedicated distributors all around, not sure where in canada you are, but you can always e-mail PC and ask where the nearest one to your location is
 
Changed oil in my E430 2 weeks ago, used 5 quarts Mobil 1 0W20 and 2 quarts Mobil 1 0W40 plus 6oz VSOT. I think the mixed is a thick 0W20. The engine is as quiet as with other xW20 I had been using for 3+ years.

I used 1.5 quarts less than capacity of 8.5 quarts, the oil level on dipstick is almost at the middle of add and full marks.

I don't know about the blend of all blends but a 0w30 with a much higher Viscosity Index than is available over the counter. This means it's much lighter below operating temperatures than other 0w30 oils. Also, you are able to tune the viscosity to your engine if you have the benefit of pressure and temperature gauges.

As was said, your best bet is to find a distributor. I use the local fuel oil depot. They don't stock it but get deliveries every week. Way better prices, I'm paying $5.62/liter for the 0w30.
 
Caterham Blend why ?.

Surely is there is an off the shelf oil that must be suitable for needs of your vehicle.

How do you know what brew you have concocted, it benefits, short comings or side effects ?
 
Oh sure there is. Nothing wrong with the PC 0w30s that I'm running now. Realistically there's nothing wrong with any of the OTC 5w30 oils, synthetic or conventional, for my cars. They would very likely live long happy lives on any of them.

As far as what I'll have concocted, well the main goal is to concoct something lighter at start-up than is available OTC. That should be accomplished, this should be lighter than Mobil 1 0w20 at typical start-up temps but is still above 10 cst at operating temps.
 
Well, I will be getting a used oil analysis on the Petro-Canada within the next couple weeks. I'm expecting the OLM to go off this week and will probably go to Toromont the following week and have them take the sample then come home and change it. I would expect the next OCI to be in the 7-8000km range which will put me into the middle to end of the summer. I don't have any plans for an analysis on the G5 yet this year, so another VOA/used oil analysis for this blend in the G6 is possible. Especially if I can get enough SM 0w40 to get three OCIs done, in which case I would do the used oil analysis on the third OCI again, not till the end of the year or early next year. Guess I could get one done earlier though.

I presume the reference to the SM oil being lighter was to the Cdn version of the Mobil 1 0W-40 which has a HTHSV of 3.6cP and 187 VI vs the 3.8cP and 185 VI SN USA version?

In comparing the resulting viscosities of any mix it's best to look at the more relevant HTHSVs. The 50/50 mix should produce a 0w30 with a HTHSV of about 3.1cP. A 60/40 mix in favour of the Toyota oil a HTHSV closer to 3.0cP on par with Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 but with a very much higher VI.

Don't know what cp3 paid up his way but the retail price on a single litre is about $7.50. If you buy a 12L case you expect at least a 15% discount and as high as 30%.
It's also available in a 5L jug for about 25 bucks; that's what rcy paid recently.

That Mobil 1 blend will give you a light 0W-30. The addition of the heavy VSOT should bump the viscosity up to a mid-grade 30wt.
 
Ha ha! You caught me. My post was a little confusing. I have two PDS (SM & SN) but was looking at the thicker 100C number of the SM and did not catch the lower HTHS number, which I do have in my spreadsheet.....

.....with the HTHS in mind, I'll stick with 50/50 and stay slightly thicker as summer is coming. Don't want to push it too far with out some gauges to verify.

So we don't get the newer SN version up here? Not that it really matters either way to me.

Price per liter was $5.75 for the Toyota 0w20 and the Mobil 1 0w40 was on sale for $8.39 for a total of $7.07/liter for the blend. Not bad for a synthetic up here.
 
cp3, if you paid $5.75 without having to buy a 12L case that's a good deal.

That's another example of why it's best to ignore the KV100 spec' and rely on the reliable HTHSV to predict the hot operational viscosity.
Just use the virgin KV100 calculation to determine viscosity loss in a subsequent UOA, assuming you don't have an OP gauge.
