Castrol Syntec

dude your wasting that oil by only draining it every 5k miles. 5k miles is cake on even the cheapest SM Gf-4 conventional oil these days. Mobil 1 Extended Performance could handle 15-25k mile drains.

What do you mean "it really wasn't synthetic"?
Bertrayed? How?
Please give me a break!

Cause it doesn't use mainly PAO's as the basestocks?
Even though it performs as well or better under the everyday driving conditions?

ESPECIALLY with the 5K oil change intervals!

Here we go again with "this one vs that one" arguement that has been BEATEN to DEATH on this site. Before you two posted, did you READ what I wrote? I really don't care that 5K OCI's may be too frequent for Mobil 1 Extended Performance or ANY ******* oil for that matter. The original poster was requesting used oil analysis for Syntec for a 5K-7K OCI. I only responded with my visual observations and background use of Syntec 5W30 at 5K OCI's for a total of 50K. I did fail to mention that I ran Syntec 10W30 in my 1993 Toyota Corolla starting at 30K up until 170K and then sold the car. It is still on the road and has to be around 200+K now. Castrol Syntec has performed very well for me and I am not bashing it. The Ford Crown Vics I used to drive were trashed at 100K with 3K OCI's with whatever conventional oil Goodyear uses.

I have read numerous posts on this board about this oil and that. I would never use Super Tech oil but some people swear by it. I wouldn't use Quaker State or Pennzoil, or whatever is available. To each their own. If it works for them, then it works. Any oil should be good if you change it according to the manual or UOA reports.

If your medical provider suddenly switched the dosage on your medicine, or the ingredients, and didn't tell you about it, would you feel betrayed? The company which makes my dog's food changed formulas all of a sudden. I checked the label and found Red Dye #40. My dog is allergic to Red Dye #40. It makes him puke up the food. If they had not stated the change on the label, I would have bought it as usual and it would have made him sick. I had to switch manufacturers. Castrol decided to change its formula and not notify the consumer. That, to me, is betrayal. Especially when there is no cost savings. On principle alone, I would rather pay $6+ a qt for Mobil 1 Extended Performance and use an OCI of 5K (especially while still under warranty), than give ANY more of my money to Castrol. If M1 changes and I find out, I will find another oil to use.

What is actually very funny about this site is everyone's loyality to certain oils and such. I was a Castrol Syntec fan. Now that I have read some interesting articles on the oil, I am not. It doesn't mean that the oil is bad, it just means that I decided to change my brand.

What's next "Taste's great. NO, Less filling"?

You give me break.

A PAO will flow better on cold starts than a Grp 3. Also, PAO has a naturally higher VI, so it needs less VI improvers (plastic), which is not something I want in my motor if I have a choice.

Hello. I have been running Syntec in my 04 350Z with 7.5K OCI's. I have been extremely pleased with it. No consumption, liked it alot. Switched to Amsoil for S&G will prolly try RP next time too. Heres my OUA with 7680 on the oil.
GMZ's UOA Syntec 5w30 7680 mi

I find this thread amusing in the fact that one person felt betrayed because a manufactor changed a formulation. The person would have continued using said product unknowing of the change(5k OCI always) and the manner in how it was used would have not affected his machinery. If you were going extended OCI then yes it would overall affect your machine but since you still change it at 5k OCI you would have remained completely oblivious to the fact.

Also the dog analogy is really wrong, your car will not have a digestive problem if the oil is changed, try using something a little more in context.

It is as synthetic as Mobil, PP, QS...not meant for extreme extended drains just meant to fufill the OEM requirements and then exceed them. Yes agaisnt Mobil EP it may lose in a OCI contest, but that in itself is far from a fair comparrison.

The only names that should be in question is the off brands like Supertech and Coastal. I have seen some UAOs that are pretty poor for baring the name synthetic.

FWIW, I bought my 2003 Matrix new with 6 miles on the OD. At 1K, I dropped the OEM oil and put in regular Castrol dyno. At 5K, I dropped that and put in the Castrol synthetic blend. At 10K, I dropped the blend and went full Castrol Syntec. OCI has been 5K. Each drop and re-fill used an OEM filter. I stayed with the recommended 5W30.

I recently pulled the valve cover to replace some lift bolts (it's a Toyota 2ZZGE thing). Everything looked very nice. No sludge and nothing to cause me any concern. The inside of the cover looked brand new. The valves and such looked very nice. Maybe a little bit of discoloration (varnish ?) but no sludge.

I probably would have stayed with Castrol Syntec but I only recently found this site and learned that it really wasn't synthetic. I kind of felt betrayed. I ran an Amsoil Engine flush and then re-filled with Mobil 1 Extended Performance. We will see what the M1 does for the next 50K with 5K OCI's as I won't pull the valve cover again until then. Yes, I know I am wasting money but before anyone jumps on the bandwagon, it's MY money to waste and it's my piece of mind.

I don't do used oil analysis and really have no intention of going out to 10 or 15K OCI's, even though the oil mfg says I can. I am the kind of person that starts to get anxious when the odometer clicks 5001 and I can't drop the oil or get the tires rotated for a couple of days (it only means another 100 miles or so but it bothers me).

Please don't flame me with your opinions about my choice of oil or OCI's. I was only offering mine in response to the thread FWIW.

Dude, going over 5K miles in a new Toyota is going against Toyota's recomended oil change and would void the warranty. The chances of a engine failure are next to nothing, but it can happen. Either way, you are recomending that this user bypass Toyota's oil change limits.

With that said, untill you are out of your power train warranty, stop wasting money on oil that can go over 5K miles.

I would have to disagree 100% that over 5K miles on the newer VVTi engines is a piece of cake for the cheapest conventional oil. The engines run hotter and leaner then they used too.

I give up. WHERE did I bash Castrol Syntec? The original poster asked for used oil analysis of Castrol Syntec. Not having any, I merely gave an example of the "success" I had with that oil over many years.

Some of you guys really need to get off your high horses about oil. I used Castrol Syntec for years, and could very well have continued to use it without any problems, and I fully realize that. Do you support your favorite brand of beer or your prefered cigarette this much (provided that's your thing)?

The whole point is that it was MY CHOICE to switch. Castrol chose to change their formulation. From what I read on this site, it wasn't until Mobil sued that the change was made public. Had Castrol not duped the public, I would probably still use it. I may even go back to it if the M1 doesn't work out.

So now that I use Mobil 1 Extended Performance, should I just go 15K and only top off when I change the filter every 5K? Or should I buy a $15 filter to go the 15K distance? Or should I do used oil analysis every 5K to see how the oil's holding up? $35 a 5qt jug + a $5 filter = $40 x 3 = $120. $35 a qt + ($5 filter x 3) = $50 + ($30 used oil analysis x 2) = $110. Oops, forgot to add the cost of the top off oil.

There are much cheaper alternatives out there but who cares. The Syntec is about $25 for a 5qt jug. $10 over 5K miles is nothing to me. Sorry.

Get back to the original point of the thread and post something useful.

This is not intended as a flame, but I'm interested in Mobil 1 Extended Performance and would like to hear why you chose it over standard Mobil 1.

I guess that quakerstate, valvoline, shell, pennzoil, havoline etc also duped the public.
Why is it that syntec only gets bashed never the other group 3's?

Pennzoil Platinum is not group 3. It is group 5. Please see all topics related to PP. Thank you. Quaker State Synthetic, Valvoline synthetic and Havoline synthetic are group 3.

HOW they duped the public????????????????????

You must own stock in Castrol to get that bent out of shape about a motor oil.

I don't own Castrol stock.
Bent out of shape?
Hmm, the last time I checked BITOG is a motor oil site, isn't it?

zp17990...Did i say platinum? No i did not. At some of the stores by me they still carry the group 3 Pennzoil Full Synthetic namely wallmart. Did you think this was pennzoil's first syn? Now can you answer the question instaed of reporting what everybody already knows? Thank you.

Speedtc, you might want to specify which Pennzoil synthetic oil you're referring to when you post. Since the old Pennzoil synthetic is no longer produced but is still found on some store shelves, you should be as clear as possible which Pennzoil synthetic you're referring to.
