Why is it that syntec only gets bashed never the other group 3's?

Well, this horse is about as dead as they come, but IMO, Castrol does deserve somewhat "special" treatment. They were originally brewing Syntec as a PAO product, just like M1. When they realized they could make a G-III product easier and cheaper, the switched to G-III. Oddly enough, the price stayed right where it was, and they held the product out as if nothing had changed. I'm well aware that G-III oils can and do work just fine. If you're comfortable with the product, then by all means, please use it. I might even consider it if they sold it somewhere around $3 per quart. But there it is, priced right along with the G-IV and G-V products. Of course, if the market supports the pricing, power to them (I just won't be buying, except GC...).

The other companies are just followers that hopped on the G-III bandwagon after Castrol cleared the way for them.

Maybe it would be best if independant blenders were driven out of business by gigantic corporate oil monopolies, then everyone would be happy.

For what it's worth, the G-III that everyone seems to love, Rotella T Synth, has also started marching up in price lately. It's pretty much pulled even with Pennzoil Platinum if you buy a gallon jug and a quart at Walmart.

Is Supertech the only bargain left? Shhh!

I probably would have stayed with Castrol Syntec but I only recently found this site and learned that it really wasn't synthetic. I kind of felt betrayed. I ran an Amsoil Engine flush and then re-filled with Mobil 1 Extended Performance. We will see what the M1 does for the next 50K with 5K OCI's as I won't pull the valve cover again until then. Yes, I know I am wasting money but before anyone jumps on the bandwagon, it's MY money to waste and it's my piece of mind.

This is not intended as a flame, but I'm interested in Mobil 1 Extended Performance and would like to hear why you chose it over standard Mobil 1.

I only really picked the Mobil 1 Extended Performance from what I have read here at this site and from what some others have said concerning its use in Toyota's, specifically Tundras. Yes, I KNOW, the EP is overkill but once again, it's my money. I figured that if it was guaranteed for 15K, it would do as good or better than the Syntec I was using ("Dang, did he just say M1 was better, I should get on my soapbox now."). Also, I had no desire to try Pennzoil, SuperTech, Chevron, Motorcraft, Toyota OEM, Valvoline, etc. I had considered using Amsoil 0W30 and running the 1 year OCI's. It would have saved a little money maybe but the upfront cost was too much for me for 2 vehicles. When you add in the used oil analysis, I felt that I would have broken even. After using the Amsoil Engine flush, I though maybe too that the EP would provide a little better protection if any of the flush didn't drain out. I may use the regular M1 next time instead.

And *gasp* I ran the orange can of death for 10 years on my Corolla and it is still going strong.

This site is proof positive that just about every oil out there works the way it was designed to provided that the proper OCI's are followed and people actually keep the proper level in their vehicles. The proper (long drain) OCI can be determined by a used oil analysis, but I am not interested in doing that. I do 5K OCI's now which corresponds with my tire rotations and everything else in the maint guide for my car. I could follow the 7.5K guide but don't choose to.

On a side note, I have been hearing more and more commercials for oil (or been paying more attention) and found that every synthetic out there claims to perform better than conventional oils. Talk about apples and oranges. I want to hear Syntec (or Mobil 1 for that matter) make the claim against another synthetic oil.

wantin150,

Ok, maybe I just don't get your thought process here, but, on one hand you're saying that you have no desire to use brand X, Y, and Z oil. All of which are fine oils, but you explicitly said they were a no-no for you, presumably because they're not a full blown synthetic and you feel they'll make your engine explode. Ok that's all fine and dandy, but then you turn right around and say that ANY oil is good as long as you keep a proper OCI and maintain your oil level. No offence to you and your compulsive anal tendencies, but, you got half the forum scratchin their heads.

You got any of that barely used Mobil 1 Extended Performance left in your drain bucket? If so I could get at least 2 more OCI's out of it...

I noticed, and I think I've read it before, although I think in the midst of all the chaos that has become this thread, most folks skipped over it. It was a very good UOA IIRC. I'd have no problem running Syntec, but I'm doing strictly dino for awhile seeing how I built up a nice stash of the dreaded Pennzoil and that G0d awful Havoline when they were on sale...(of course that was just a joke, since our friend here thinks anything short of running Mobil 1 Extended Performance a third of it's intended useage will result in a thrown rod..LOL).

(...swnip...)Dude, going over 5K miles in a new Toyota is going against Toyota's recomended oil change and would void the warranty. The chances of a engine failure are next to nothing, but it can happen. Either way, you are recomending that this user bypass Toyota's oil change limits.(...snip...)

Memo:

With all due respect, you're dead wrong on that. US new car warranties are governed by the Moss-Magnuson Warranty Act (MMWA). Mfrs and dealers can say whatever they want about their wtys, but anything they say that purports to give you less rights than the MMWA grants is totally unforceable.

Under the MMWA, there is no such thing as "voiding" a warranty. In fact, if the mfr wants to deny a claim for repair under wty, they have the burden of proving that something the owner (or some other 3rd party) did was the actual cause of the failure at issue. The mere fact that one did not do timely oil changes can not be the basis for a claim denial, unless the mfr can prove that the neglected oil actually caused the claimed failure. The can not refuse a repair as a "penalty" for not changing oil on time.

In addition, even if the mfr does prove that the failure is the owner's fault, and successfully denies the repair claim, the warranty is still in full force for the rest of its term -- it is not at all void. So, for example, if you don't change your oil, your engine sludges and dies, you might well see the mfr deny your claim for a new engine (probably should...), but if a week later, your CD player blows up, it will still be covered, since obviously, your failure to change oil can't be shown to have caused it to fail.

In the end, of course, it's best to avoid fights, even fights you know you'll win in the end. With that in mind, the safe course is to stay with the mfr's oil change recommendations during the wty period. After that, do what your UOA suggests is most effective.

Any oil IS good enough to use as long as you follow the recommended OCI's, do used oil analysis and keep the level up. Just because I choose not to use a particular oil doesn't mean that I think it's a bad oil. This site has shown the oils that I choose not to use to be very good. I just CHOOSE not to use them.

I NEVER said that any of the oils I mentioned would make your engine explode, nor that they were a no-no for me. I just have no desire to try them, regardless of how they perform. Presuming is almost as bad as assuming.

Can't someone here have an opinion that differs from everyone else's and not get hammered over it?

It seems like a lot of people missed the point here and jumped on the bashing me wagon. I NEVER said any of the oils were bad. As a matter of fact, I said POSITIVE things about Castrol Syntec and what it had done for me over the years. Other than the fact that "I" felt betrayed by a company who changed formulas and didn't bother to let the public make an informed decision, there is nothing wrong with their oil. I could give a rat's behind that it works the same. It isn't the same, period. When I found out it was different, I changed. And "duped" for those who don't know, is "deceived" but I am not getting into that whole symantics thing again. Selling something as one thing, changing it, and still selling it as the original is deception.

I am really glad that some of you guys stretch your oil as far as you possibly can. Go for it. I am glad that some of you guys change your oil every 3K regardless. I CHOOSE to use more expensive oil with a 5K OCI. As long as I am able to maintain that, why do you ******* care that I am wasting oil?

Please get down from your soapboxes and high horses and contribute something positive to the thread...like YOUR experiences with Syntec or YOUR used oil analysis with Syntec for 5-7K and get off my back.

wantin150. I understand what you are saying, I think that everyone in here, including vad and bighead, are loyal to a certain degree to an oil, and because of some bias, don't like other oils. There is nothing wrong with this, if wantin150 doesn't want to run pennzoil or whatever, fine. If he feels as if Castrol is a bad company, then they are to him. So, why is it that vad, specifically, can't stand anyone not using Castrol products? Or, he gets mad if anyone doesn't like it. He sounds like a 2 year old child throwing a fit. Bighead, no offence to YOUR anal retentive tendencies, but, why are you over analizing what he is saying? All he is saying, is that money is not an issue, and he feels like Mobil 1 Extended Performance will work in his motor for 5k, which it will. What is the problem. Are you purchasing his oil for him?

It has been driven into everyones head that synthetics are superior to conventional oils. This is simply an overly broad generalization and proves how years of marketing can influence behavior. This is not about oil. This is about human nature.

Being disrespectful as by asking to clarify a statement or to explain a stated position and what it's based upon?

Coop0129...Don't backpedal now. You said if vad was in front of you you would slap him in the face. Then you pussed out and went back and deleted your post because you cannot stand up to your word. You can moonwalk with the best of em'! Vad was not being disrespectful. You were!
Good way to punk out!

Threatening? Well, I just don't agree with vad and bighead, and someone needs to say something to them. Just because they don't agree with someone doesn't mean they need to be disrespectful to them.

Coop0129, I don't care what you or anyone uses.
The only thing I can't stand are the attacks without a merit on the Group III based oils.
Just because you feel that PAO basestocks are superior in every way, all based on the outdated believes, doesn't make it necessarily so.
The same way Castrol Syntec.
Just because someone calls it a "fake" synthetic because of his bias doesn't make it automatically inferior to other synthetics.
If you have a problem with my stance, then too bad.
