I am looking for a reasonable priced oil to use in my VW 1.8T Beetle. I have GC 0W30 in now, but most people on the VW forums use Castrol 5W40. I know the 5W40 meets all VW specs for the engine, but wondered if it is made in Europe or US?

I am also considering Mobil 1 0W40. I'm not brand loyal, just buy what's on sale...

At least in the US, Syntec 5w-40 used to be made in Belgium, but now seems to be made in the US.

If you want 5w-40, you may also try Rotella T6, if it's available in Canada.

It's interesting to me that Syntec 5w40 along with GC are both on Castrol Edge's list of oils that won't be in the initial change to Edge w/ Syntech Technology as they are apparently leaving both as is until the new versions get all of the testing done to be able to match their existing specs.

This makes me think it is still perhaps made in Belgium as if they were to mess with it then they would have to retest for the specs, no? I'm not sure myself, just asking. But it makes sense if they're leaving it off the list of grades they are moving to Edge w/ Syntec Technology for that reason then they probably haven't already messed with it, without us knowing, for those same reasons.

I do know this, I've seen some recent used oil analysis of the 5w40 here from the States that is absolutely MOST impressive. The former along with this makes me think it still probably is the Belgium stuff. It's still listed as A3/B4 too isn't it? If so, that alone makes me have faith in the stuff.

I'd love to be able to find some on one of the parts stores sales myself as the current GC run in my car is not doing well on several fronts; and after seeing those two BC used oil analysis on the same car as mine, that were among the best I've ever seen for it, I'd love to get some in my stash to try. Where are you guys getting it at? Is it like GC and only available at certain stores like PB and AZ?

That's where I've seen it.

What sort of problems are you having with GC in your Mazda?

I checked my local CT today, and the Syntec 5W40 says "now made in USA" (may have said blended in USA) on the back of the bottle. At any rate it's no longer from Belgium.

Just out of curiosity would Mobil 1 0W40 be prefered over Syntec 5W40 for VAG 1.8T, or are we now splitting hairs on oil?

Theoretically, Mobil 1 0w-40 meets more stringent specs than Syntec 5w-40 and may be capable of somewhat longer drain intervals, so it just depends on how often you plan to change your oil.

VW recommends every 5000 Miles, so for me its once per year. I don't drive it in the winter...

I think Quattro Pete was letting you know that Mobil 1 0w-40 meets higher spec's like MB 229.5 v Castrol 5w-40 meeting previous 229.3, and may have higher TBN etc..regardless of the 0 vs. 5.

Then Shell Rotella T6 5w40 is an excellent choice for you! It's usually one of the least expensive yet excellent performing 5w40 CJ-4 oils out there.

You might also consider PC Duron 5w40 or Duron-E 0w40.

I thought only longitudinal 1.8T(nevrlose) got the 5k OCI, or was that extended to all models?

That's interesting. Here the Syntec 5W40 says "Now blended in USA" The other grades say "Made in USA" except for the 0W30 which says "Made in Germany"

I wonder if they import the base oil, then put the add pack in here (USA)

The 5w40 has been made in the US for about 6-7 years. I don't think they would import a group 3 oil when that's already made in the US. I would guess there are some high tech additives Castrol uses, like those in GC, that are made in Germany, that could be imported for use in the 5w40.

So, GC 0W30 is a group IV, and Syntec 5W40 is a group III?

Yes. Or to be more precise, GC used to be group IV, but it underwent a few changes along the way, so we don't really know for sure what it is made of nowadays.

Not that it matters... as long as the oil does its job, who cares what group it is...
