Castrol Syntec 0W30 - is it GC?

I'm confused as to whether the Castrol Syntec 0w30 I just put in my 87 Caprice is actually GC. I live in Ontario Canada and didn't think I could find GC around here. It looks like the normal newer style bottles of Syntec, black with green and red on it. I already threw the bottles in the garbage so I can't look at them now. I assumed it was just regular U.S/Canada Syntec until I looked on here and only used oil analysis I can find on 0w30 is being called GC? Anyone know for sure? I'm going to stop at the store later on and check the bottles again.

I'm going to get a used oil analysis done at the end of this OCI to see how well this stuff works in an old carb'd V8 engine. Thanks in advance.

GC or "German Castrol" is the very unofficial name for the product.

If it is 0w30 grade Castrol Syntec, AND it says "Made in Germany" somewhere on the back (the location has changed a couple times), then yes, that's GC. Be careful though, some 0w30 Syntec was made in the US.

If you bought it from Walmart or Canadian Tire then it is most likely GC. I haven't seen any of the older 0w30 Syntec around here in those stores in a very long time, and even when we did have it up here, it was in the older style bottles, I never did see any of the US made stuff in the newer bottles with the newer labelling. So it looks like you definitely have GC in there.

Another question, is the Syntec 5w40 GC as well? It's supposed to be made for the Diesel VW's and stuff.

The 5w40 Syntec we've got up here is made in Belgium, so we don't refer to it here as GC, we usually call it BC.

Patman, I was told by a friend who just put it in that the 5-40 is now "made in the USA" and no longer Belgium.

I've heard that also, although all the bottles I've seen at Canadian Tire up here have still said made in Belgium on them, so perhaps as usual we are a few months behind in getting the newest formulations of a motor oil. The only time I think Canada has ever been ahead of the game was when GC first arrived in North America, as you'll recall we got it up here long before they saw it in the US. I still remember when you first posted about spotting this oil up here (at the Sherway Gardens Walmart) and my mad rush to search the city to find it.
