Castrol Edge vs Valvoline synpower

At the same price I'd buy the Edge as I prefer a Mg or high Ca add pack over Sodium. If the Synpower was $1/qt I'd buy that in a grade I can use. I passed on $2/qt Synpower at AZ last week....not cheap enough. But I bought the Edge at $2/qt.

Both quality oils and I would not hesitate using either if priced the same. Of course if "all" oil prices were the same, I would pick Pennzoil Plat. It puts less oil vapor in the air to recirculate to the engine and if I had a DI engine it would be the only oil that I would use regardless of price. Right now I have Valvoline Syn and M1 in my stash because of price.

It is? Pardon my scepticism, but I think we'd all like to see a link or something. It is a relatively popular grade, and Castrol is one of the few companies offering multiple grades for A3/B4 options. At least up here, they have no problem commanding the shelf space.

I've noticed all the parts chains here have discontinued alot of oil weights. No more Edge 5W50,0W40,or 0W30. No more Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40 or 15W50.

Here, Wakefield markets aggressively. If a small store carries Castrol, there's a very good chance it will even carry oddballs like 5w30 A3/B4 and 5w30 C3/dexos2, much less a mainstay like 0w30 A3/B4.

That's awesome! I remember when Walmart carried all the exotic and oddball Syntec and Edge weights. They actually carried Syntec 20W50 back when Castrol made it. The last rare weight I remember Walmart carrying was that orange label Belgian 0W30.

Both are good oils, and I have both Edge and SynPower in my stash right now.

However, if same price and same spec., and I had to pick one then it would be Edge. I'm a long time Castrol user, and in most of my performance engines (all motorcycles) I've run nothing but Castrol synthetics for more than a decade.

Pennzoil needs to take notes up here. At the corner parts store, I can get Castrol 0w30 A3/B4, 0w-40 A3/B4, 5w30 A3/B4, 5w-40 A3/B4, and 5w30 C3/dexos2, not to mention the usual grades. Yet, finding Pennzoil Ultra in even ILSAC grades requires a pith helmet and a machete.

I totally get where your coming from. I called Castrol number for the US. Don't know if it's different in Canada and simply asked if 0w30 is being discontinued. They said yes. I don't have the number on hand, but you can call them to confirm.

please educate me on the "less oil vapor" comment for the PP.
also I`ve read the comments on the sodium in the synpower.
I`m currently using Valvoline SynPower 5w30 in a SC`d application. I plan on doing a used oil analysis in another 500 miles and I`ll see what excess everyone is talking about. my OCI`s are low, so Im not going for long drains...

thanks...PR

The GTL based products of Pennzoil Pure-Plus and Shell Helix Ultra tend to have low Noack volatility %. I believe this is what they are referring to.
