Right now I have Valvoline Syn and Mobil 1 in my stash because of price.

please educate me on the "less oil vapor" comment for the PP.

thanks...PR

The GTL based products of Pennzoil Pure-Plus and Shell Helix Ultra tend to have low Noack volatility %. I believe this is what they are referring to.

thank you.
I`m doing a bit of sampling. Had used Amsoil XL but with a low oci bc of travel reasons, and the UOA came back great. Running the synpower to 3k and then getting that checked. I have PP on the shelf, and I`ll do the same with that when I exhaust the stash of Valvoline.
If the PP has less suspended vapor than that would be ideal with less contamination if that is the point.

we`ve all read the various reasons why manufacturers suggest a brand or product with it`s endorsements.
Some folks swear on the Pennzoil Platinum / Pennzoil Ultra for the hellcat, etc etc etc...

there was no Mobil 1 5w30 on the shelf when I purchased my test stash, but I`ll get to that eventually.

As it stands right now, probably Edge because Synpower is much easier to find around here at a reasonable price. If Edge were more available, I'd give the advantage to Synpower because I prefer Valvoline to Castrol.

Belgian Castrol is NOT dying! Plenty in stock at AAP/Carquest! I just went to AAP and saw it in stock

It certainly could be different up here. We get a slightly different product line and a completely different distribution company, even with some different product license numbers. So, anything is possible. The 0w30 is far from a weak seller up here, and its only real competition in its own line is the 0w-40 because of the jug size.

I do see the rationale in consolidating their A3/B4 line, from a BITOGer type perspective. As far as I'm concerned, their 0w-40 A3/B4 covers every A3/B4 application out there and comes in more sensible container sizes. But, they have the 5w-40, 5w30, and 0w30 A3/B4 options here, and they must have had some rationale for having them all, unless they actually are consolidating more than just getting rid of the 0w30 A3/B4.

I do know some viscosity sticklers in the European car community here insist upon getting the absolute "correct" SAE grade, beyond simply the appropriate Audi/VW, MB, or BMW specification. Generally speaking, getting rid of 0w30 A3/B4 might result in more hate mail for Castrol than they've seen in a few years.

This.

Both wrong inherently with either but my Honda's love Valvoline so I'll stick with it and Mobil on rebate.

Which Synpower are you asking about?
There is API Synpower with its sodium add pack that at least one engine builder on here observes keeps engines very clean and gives low crankshaft journal wear and there are the Euro grades of Synpower that meet the same certs as the Euro grades of Castrol.
Between the two, there isn't much to choose as either would work well in the applications it's intended for.
That said, I'd take the Synpower since in doing so I'd be supporting a relatively small American blender rather than a foreign behemoth.

Sure, although that wasn't the OP's question.
Within the grades you've mentioned, there is a Euro spec 5w30 Synpower, but good luck finding it anywhere outside of a drum in an indie shop.
I've used Edge, Syntec and Synpower and found no particular reason to prefer the Castrol product.
I tried the original Gold bottle Edge way back when expecting great things that I didn't actually find in running it based upon what someone who still posts here had written.

Despite our oil marketing difficulties in Canada, at least we're lucky enough I can find Castrol Edge black and gold bottle 5w30 SN/GF-5, 5w30 A3/B4, and 5w30 C3/dexos2 all on the same shelf.

Belgium Castrol over hyped why NOT buy the one made in your own country and support the local economy.

I would include the factory location where the vehicle is assembled.

I don't want to be a downer, but I did call again today to confirm and they said that Castrol Edge 0W30 A3/B4 has been discontinued. Recommended me to use 5W30 A3/B4 for the application I asked about (02 BMW 325xi). It does seem to be a hyped up oil and I'd rather support American refineries. I'm over it.

I still wonder why 0W40 isn't listed as an available Edge grade on their site. And all of the parts chains here have stopped carrying it.

I'm putting Castrol EDGE 0w40 a3/b4 in my Caprice with a high mileage 305 SBC tomorrow. I went with it because Castrol EDGE seems to be the one oil Canadian Tire is putting good sales on lately and I'm hoping the euro formula will help prevent wearing of the flat tappet camshaft since they tend to have higher zddp than other passenger car oils. It also might leak a bit less with the 40w.

Castrol: Because it is LL-01 certified and BMW thought it was good enough as factory fill for all their cars (for a while at least). Plus, McLaren and Bugatti now use it, which is cool, and the titanium additive sounds neat. I'm sure they're both fine.

Edge, I've never been a big fan of Valvoline synthetics, only their conventional oil for me. Pennzoil, M1, and Edge are the only synthetics I will use on any given day in that order.

It might help if they got that product more available in the States. It's not nearly as impressive as the 0w30 A3/B4, in my view, though. I bet there'll be another big rush on 0w30 on the shelves again.
