Wow, this is the single biggest complaint I hear whenever I take the Mustang to the dealer for service. An "operating characteristic of the 5.0L engine and no repairs should be attempted"?! Touch wood, I haven't had this issue yet.

I have a feeling I know what you aren't having that issue.

The Ford V8 Coyote "Typewriter Tick" (aka the "BBQ Tick") is very random in frequency and more pronounced in the bottom end of the motor, it's not valve train noise. Just search "BBQ Tick" on YouTube if you want to hear what the ticking sounds like that the Ford SSM is addressing.


Mine has done it since new and it is in the valvetrain. My car has seen nothing but 5W50 since it is a Track Pack. The older 4.6 and 5.4 DOHC engines would do it from coolant pooling in the rear of the head and not having an outlet. There would be excessive valve guide wear which was addressed with updated cylinder head castings, 2C5Z-6049-BAB and 2C5Z-6049-CAB.
