Casrol "Syntec" synthetic oil

Good evening to all,

I just noticed from my OLM monitor off my 08' Impala SS that it's down to 28% and so most likely the end of July I fugure my oil change is coming up. Going to another GM dealership these guys offer a synthetic option using Castrol "Syntec" so I wanted to find out opinions aout this oil in the 5w30 weight vesion. Is BP Castrol a good brand to use in my V-8 engine????

Syntec wasn't getting a lot of love on BITOG in years past. But I've been out of the loop and things may have chged.

I have nothing against Castrol products as a whole. They have shown to perform just fine like the rest. But in terms of price thats where its just crazy. $25 for a jug of syntec is pretty overpriced when PP is $23.50 and we all love that sweet sweet PP. Id pay the extra buck and get PU myself. But hey if your a Castrol lover nothing wrong with supporting your brand, they all perform great these days.

Why spend the $60+ and your time to get it done at the dealer (being in LA I'd bet it is $80 or more). Right now Pep Boys has 5 qts of this oil and I think a P1 filter for $23.99 after $5 MIR.

You ccan change it yourself for less time than driving to the dealer, getting it done, and driving home, at 1/3 the cost.

Can't vouch for Syntec, from the adverts it seems like a solid oil....heh. But they've gone over their heads, 2 diff colored bottles, one "Titanium" and one "regular"......heh, but that's just me

As long as it meets the reqs per your manual, have no fear, it'll work out.

Its good oil, just think there are other brands that give the same bang for less money. I think you are about as good going with Quaker State Ultimate Durability for several bucks less, and if you go with Pennzoil Ultra or Platinum, you are doing better. All the major brands work well, and if you are not pinching pennies, its hard to go wrong honestly.

BITOG is a fickle group; tough to please. One minute you're loved next minute you're hated.

GC has always been loved, but Synteq...not so much.

Just about any SM 5w30 will work in GM's GenIII engine. The Oil Life Monitor is calibrated with the assumption that conventional oil is being used, so you don't necessarily need synthetic. I generally don't like Castrol oils; too pricey and the spec's are always something of a mystery.

Hi guys/gals,

The reason I go to the dealer is cuz my SS Impala is under warranty and so I don't want to cause the dealer any issues if something goes wrong under the warranty. The dealer I'm going to uses Castrol instead of the typical Mobil 1 products that I thought all GM dealerships uses. The origional place it was purchased ( Power ) went under shortly after I bought the car and they didn't even tell me!!! I did noticed though they used Chevron products so I guess now a days the dealership uses what ever they contract to get.

Anyway I appreciate your opinions and no matter what in a month service will be due.

I like GC, and have used it in various applications over the years, none of which really needed a Euro spec A3 oil, kind of like the Forester in my sig really doesn't.
The other Syntec oils never got much love here.
I have Syntec 5w30 in my '99 Accord right now, and it sounds fine, and I'm sure it will be fine.
I have a few changes worth in my stash, so I figured I'd better use it.
There are some good Syntec (not GC) ROAs in that forum on here.
Nothing wrong with any Castrol oil.
A lot wrong with the marketing and the pricing.

Advanced Auto has Castrol Syntec 5 qts. with a Bosch Distance Plus Oil filter for $29. That's a $13 filter.

I'm not Castrol SYNTEC's biggest fan mainly due to pricing and their previous seeming hesitancy to meet even basic manufacturer specs. However, GM dealerships sell a one specifically formulated to meets all of GM's specs and it isn't generally available IIRC, and SYNTEC seems to have been improved across the line..

I used to use castrol syntec on my 2006 camry v6 for a year. it was a great oil, and quiet at the idle. You can't even tell the engine is on. but anyway. 2011! Chevron Supreme time. no mas syntec.

In my opinion, you can use any conventional oil that have API SN symbol on it. good luck.

I do know that my Impala can accept dine rather than synthetic but for myself I'll use synthetic as long as I can afford it. Using the new OLM in my SS this currentoil is going into it's 8th month for almost 6K or service. I've never change oil this long before and everyone says the GM OLM is accurate. Tonight the monitor tells me it's now 25% so I figure in a month and a half it'll be ready for the next service. I'm just surprised this dealership prefers Castrol instead of the usual Mobil 1.

I like what was posted earlier: nothing at all wrong with the product, just beware the marketing and the price!

After coming here we now buy whatever branded synthetic is on sale. They're all good.

Syntec is undoubtedly a good oil. Moreover, the idea of a Full Synthetic oil in a car with an OLM is appealing. The OLM was most likely calibrated for conventional or semi synthetic-syn so you're getting an extra margin of safety with the syntec. Assuming that your car is still under warranty, I personally like the idea of having the oil changed at the dealearship. It costs a bit more, but there is no doubt about it being done on time and with stuff that meets their specs.. Once the car is out of warranty, I view myself as a free agent. A friend runs a service station and he charges me about $15 to chnage the oil with my oil and filter. I sort of help and we talk college sports while he does it.

I use to be a hardcore castrol guy but, in the last two to three years I think they aren't the same company they wants were. When they were Burmah I think is what it was before BP they were much better. But, lately I have notice their prices are really expensive and they have two types of synthetic which is retarded if you ask me. Just have one and call it a day. To me is all marketing making people think there's so many different oils certain engines need when yet you really don't have they much of a difference except high performance and your everyday driver kind of oil thats really about it. One more thing I have noticed is Castrol has really became secretive about all of there products. I asked once about the ZDDP content of GTX I think it was and was told it was proprietary information. Grant it I understand some things are but come on antiwear additives? If you can't tell me basic information why should I spend top dollar for your product? Just my two.
