Cash for Clunkers...

I did hear there are some too nice to crush in my area,$10,000.00 to $11,000.00 vehicles heading for the crusher. This cash for clunker is a huge joke and a huge waste of money. They people whom already traded them have to pay taxes on that $4,500.00

This whole program makes me sick. Talk about waste. Why not fix those "clunkers" and then donate the vehicles to charity or possible ship them to Mexico and sell them there. Talk about wanton waste. I realize they want them off the streets but good lord, To fill and engine with water and sieze it makes me sick. There are plenty of people who are down on their luck that could use those "clunkers" to get to work and such. Or at least sell the parts and recoup some of the money they are wasting on this. Uck.

Granted, I only watched 2 of the videos, but where the heck are the "clunkers"?

I find it hard to believe that the owner of that Volvo couldn't have gotten more than $4500 for it some other way.

It's an utter disgrace...

When I think back to my Grandparents, who lived through WW2, Grandad running cars on wood gas, converting neighbour's car to wood gas (then ultimately fitting the gasifiers to heat people's houses when fuel became available), keeping a case of second hand spark plugs "just in case" he couldn't get new ones...

Then to destroy equipment with an already huge energy investment in them in this day and age...

Absolute wanton waste.

Seeing how quickly the other "C4C" thread was locked, I'm rather shocked that this one has been left open as long as it has.

Heaven forbid that we discuss a current automotive topic such as "C4C" on an automotive board, especially a program like this one... which we've never seen before in this country.

+2.

The vehicles being crushed have years or decades left in them. It's a sickening waste!

I think the "clunker" market will continue since many people can't afford a new car regardless, but it will definitely hurt it.

Thankfully many Rangers, Bronco IIs, and other small trucks have EPA fuel economy numbers that exclude them from this, but many Explorers will be destroyed. Anyone who turns a Bronco or K5 into CFC should be tarred and feathered.

I heard that the deaerships only seize up the engine. What do they do with the rest of the vehicle? Do you think it might be possible to remove the seized up engine and put in a used one?

re: that Volvo video. That looks like an S80, which does not qualify for CFC (it's above 18 mpg). In fact I don't think Volvo makes ANY cars in the last 15 years that would qualify. Haha, I think that dealer who scrapped that car won't get reimbursed for the 3500-4500!! Behold, Karma!

More reason to not use the dealer for oil change.

What if one dumb tech pour in the euthanize juice from the wrong bulk container instead of oil?

dont worry, ours is kept in the parts dept completely separate form anything else.

heres a thought we came up at my weekly car hangout, what if someone goes to a junkyard to buy some random engine part, lets say a filter housing or oil cooler. and they find one off a car that had this done, install the part on their motor and boom, motor dead. hopefully junkyards will mark these motors somehow.

According to the rules, the dealers are supposed to add a sticker to the disabled engine:

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/30/cars-tells-dealers-how-to-kill-a-c4cs-engine/

Quote:
...the dealer must add a sticker that reads: "This engine is from a vehicle that is part of the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS). It has significant internal damage caused by operating the engine with a sodium silicate solution (liquid glass) instead of oil." The vehicle is then sent to a disposal facility that crushes or shreds the vehicle.

Not to make this political and get it locked, but I wrote a very long letter to my state Senators urging them to discontinue wasting my tax dollars on destroying serviceable vehicles and rewarding people who make poor decisions. If you're bothered by this program, I'd encourage you to do the same.

Just to start off, I also do not agree with this program. I think marking the VIN so it can no longer be traded in and selling the vehicle (or parts including the drivetrain) would have been the better way to go here.

Having said that, the family took a drive out last night to see what clunkers were in our area. The most surprising vehicles:

1)1997 - 1999 era Lexus ES300 (saw 3)
2)??? Mercedes 450? SL (saw 1)
3)2000 era Chrysler/Dodge Minivans(saw at least 6)
4)2000 era Ford Windstar/Freestar Minivans (saw at least 4)

The Mercedes was the sad one since those are generally collectible.

The rest were clunkers...rusted out mid-80's Chevy Blazer, 80's Dodge/Nissan minivans, 80's Chevy trucks, etc. I did see some mid-80's cars (Oldsmobile Cierra) which I'm not sure how they qualify since they do get a combined 18+MPG.

I briefly considered taking a ride to see this horrible waste for myself, but I think if I went onto a dealership and saw cars being destroyed for no reason I might flip out and punch someone in the face.

I've been out of town for a week on vacation. Just got back and more info about my parents cash for clunkers buy.

Dad had this old pickup that had been reliable up until about a month ago. Then it started having problems. The starter was acting up, but it had more serious problems they couldn't figure out. So with the talk about a C4C started, they parked it. He took the flatbed off of it to sell separately, and swapped the tires for a worn out set. He also has a bucket truck he used to rent that had smashed in doors (people rented it for trimming trees and occasionally limbs would hit the doors). So he swapped the doors off the bucket truck.

They weren't sure it would make it the 25 miles to the dealership, so they put it on a trailer. It didn't fit, so they had the wheels on one side up on the trailer rail. So they come into the dealership with this pickup sitting lopsided on a trailer, with bald tires, no bed, and smashed in doors. When an employee walking around with a clipboard saw it, his mouth dropped open and he said "uhhhhh, that thing has to run"

They got it to the dealership and spent an hour getting it start. Since it has to run to qualify for C4C, the dealership supplied a mechanic free of charge to get it to start.

Their salesman told them they "put the clunk in clunker"

Its irritating that tax money is being used for this, but since it is, its good to see my family getting some benefit. I told Dad I hope he enjoys the car I bought him.
