Okay, so 'Italian engineering' is an oxymoron like 'German cuisine'. Still, I'm glad I'm not the one who has to destroy that car.

How many weeks was it going to take this guy to remember that he actually owned a 1985 Maserati Bi-Turbo?

Oh, that's right. He'd been trying to FORGET that little fact for years now.

Maybe he was trying to save the dealer money by bringing in a car where you don't have to bother to destroy the engine. It comes pre-destroyed.

I left Target this morning. There's a Kia dealership next door to it. Tons of C4C vehicles in the back lined up. Old mercedes, volvo's, Ford Explorers, and Chevy Blazers. look to be mid 80s-to mid 90's vehicles.

We saw and signed the clunk papers today. It said the car was drivable, we had not used C4C programme previously, it was insured for a year and the was "registered to the owner" for the last year". Well, the car was insured, but she let the registration lapse because the engine had been damaged. The dealer is still talking in terms of "registered" for the last year...I'm not saying anything, but it's pretty clear that only the insurance has to be continuous, and it was "registered to her" (as the owner).

We did 90% of the paperwork today on the Astra and drove the actual car we are getting, a manual. It was simply awesome to drive and really well-built. Handled like it was on rails. I actually got a PM from a member here, telling me it was a "stupid car to buy". Whatever. 3 hrs drive on the road today, we didn't see another Astra! I gave it a shot of Techron + 2C, they are filling the tank later. I'll report back.

btw- my 23 y/o male cousin took the CRV and gave us the cash to deposit on the car.

AJ-

With the Astra, it seems that you very well may be ending up with a modern version of the Merkur XR4Ti... but it is your money.

Wait.... it was our money too.

Never mind. Only time will tell.

, yeah it's a clunker.

Perfectly Good Volvo engine destroyed

What a joke. This "program" is a perfect example of how the devil wastes money for no reason.

Yeah, this "program" is really good for the environment...

Sick... Just SICK!

Not stupid at all.

Even the highly critical TheTruthAboutCars.com gave the Astra a decent review:

Quote:
The fit and finish is at the very top of the segment, at least as good as this writer’s VW GTI and, in many cases, superior....

...the Astra drives superbly. The helm imparts such a premium feel that I started to get nervous that it might best my GTI in premiumfeelosity. The Astra’s steering has laser guided precision. Feedback? Enough to know where you’re going, but not so much to vibrate your hands off. Think mid 1990s BMW...

There are “sport-luxury” cars in the $30k range that don’t ride like the Astra. Zero body roll in cornering, and still totally forgiving over rough pavement. I wrung the life out of my little tester without once becoming a person of interest. Even through a tight slalom, the Astra was nonplussed. Talk about confidence.

I just don't understand how this car qualified for the "Clunker" program. Shouldn't it get better gas mileage than that? Anyway, wouldn't it be worth a lot more than $4500 trade-in on just about anything? Something very fishy here. I don't believe it.

The XR4Ti comparison was apt, but I'm not infering anything bad from it. I havn't really heard anything bad about the Astra, other than the timing belt.

Thanks for the link.

I'm thinking it's about time this thread closed. There is going to be strong feelings either way you look at it.

I feel bad for the cars...
