This is the factory installed filter from the first oil change in my brothers 08 cobalt 2.2L. Everything was intact and looked like a well made filter. I do see where it looks like it was slightly too tall from the bent pleats though?

just a word of warning, if you have the other spin on style filter housing on there and you have an engine failure, Mazda will NOT warranty it.

I've heard this a couple of times ..yet I really doubt that this ever happened. It's usually stated as "I asked my dealer service manager" ..or "I contacted .." ..but never has anyone cited an instance where this has occurred, AFAIK.
Mazda has a spin-on filter conversion and if they install it the waraanty is good.
I did change my oil on Sunday. The filter element (Mazda OEM) had very little twisting. The only thing that caught my eye was that two pleats were spread much wider than the others. There was no tearing, but it did catch my eye.
