Cartridge Filter Question

So, how does a car with a cartridge filter handle anti drain back and bypass needs?

I used to have a Mazda 3 with this type filter that was under the car/engine.

I now have a BMW with a cartridge filter on top of the engine.

One faced up and the other down.

Agree.

Loosen the oil filter holder on top of the engine after parking for more than 20-30 minutes, I can hear the oil from the cartridge filter pouring down the engine.
