Cartridge filter or spin on filter?

Really? AutoZone here told me to just throw away my oil filter when I brought it in

And they'll only take 5 quarts at a time. I just go to Wal-Mart for my recycling. They'll take as much oil as you wanna give them, provided they have room in their collection bins and also take as many filters as you bring, again, if they have room.

Autozone will take 5 gallons at a time. They take down your name and limit you to 5 gallons a month.

hehe...well, i just prefer to go my city recyling for the used oil, coolant, and plastic. i'll check out wal-mart for other fluids and oil filters. i guess just throw away the air filter...

the AZ and checkers here only take like oil and batteries. i have an oil drain pan that holds about 9 quarts, which for me is about 2 changes.

ATF, PSF, and gear oil can be taken anywhere motor oil is accepted. I have sometimes dumped my waste oil container which had all that and engine oil in it.

My Advanced Auto is very serious about NOT taking ATF.

I don't have to worry. My pal has a waste oil burner and he always needs fuel. I usually have about 20 gallons for him in year of oil changes (kids and whatnot).

Are you sure? That's what they told me last time I was there, that they would only take 5 quarts a day, with no mention of a monthly limit. I think the worker was just misinformed.. I still can't believe he just told me to throw away my old oil filters

Actually its 4 gallons. I looked on the computer screen when I brought some in where they specify the amount and it said "(limit 4 gallons)" But if they are nice they will take 5, like they did from me.

My used oil goes in an old blue kerosene container (I think it might hold 6 gallons!) When they ask how much I tell them 5 gallons, they've never flinched at that. They just tell me I have to wait until next month to bring any more, which is usually more like 6 months for me.

That is very weird for your advance auto location.

I have almost always taken used ATF to Advance, and they disposed of it every time I brought it.

Five gallons is the limit. This is not changed by store but by company. It's even in the Z-Net to limit to 20 qts.

kkreit, keep the cartridge on your Fusion. I just did another change on my Fusion and the Napa Gold cartridge filter looked perfect. No twisting at all. I decided to give the Pure One cartridge a shot this oil change...we'll see how that one holds up. My used oil analysis on the Fusion with SynPower will be going in this week.

you know, its funny... i actually did my first oil change on a cartridge-style filter. my 1996 BMW 318 uses a cartridge. i use the OEM equivalent bade by MAHLE. freakin' expensive though. man, you'd expect a cartridge to be cheaper, but the cheapest i can get them around Toronto is $10 cash from some VW parts store i know of.

from there, i expanded onwards and now i do the oil changes on all our cars... my dad's 02' caravan, my mom's 00' cougar, the company pickup (96' sierra 2500 5.7) and delivery van (97' safari), our 92' lexus SC400, and even some of my friend's cars.

to be honest... nothing is smarter than a cartridge. i don't know about a bottom-mounted cartridge. that sounds dumb. but mine is top-mounted in the engine compartment. i have a special wrench adapter that fits on my ratchet. its great. easier than any spin-on i have ever done! and much better for the environment, obviously.

Cartridge filters are a great concept. The only drawback is that as more and more OEMs come out with them, the distribution makes various quality levels not always available in all offerings. Now you can get PureOne in a few ..but most people have to settle for a (probably) rebadged filter from one or two producers. Spin-ons still rule in cross adaptive latitude. It's a little hard to feel that you're "exceeding the need" with a choice of one
