Same filter for their VR6 cars as well...this actually fits 3 of the cars in our fleet..Atlas 3.6 VR6, my son's MK3 GTI 2.8 VR6, and this Passat. I am running HPL Euro 5W40 and changed it out last Feb. Decided to do 2 years on it with a mid-OCI filter change out. The oil has ~5,500 miles on it currently and I anticipate it being less than 10K by this time next year when I change it. Nothing to see at all, totally clean. No carbon bits etc. that folks show with HPL. Must be pretty clean in there/all those short OCIs using Liquimoly oil and engine flush/Sea Foam/HPL EC it saw before this! 
Also to note..holy cow the amount of oil that came out, at least 1 qt drained. This has the oil cooler/heat exchanger external so lines etc. so it makes sense that all of that drained out. Topped off with fresh HPL! Replacement filter is a Hengst I had that's a FCP Euro LRG freebie.
