Got a Carquest premium here. Only had about 3k miles on it as I’m trying to clean up an old engine with unknown history. Was running 1qt HPL EC + 4qt Valvoline advance 5w-30 with several top ups with Castro gtx 5/30.

2004 Nissan VQ35 motor @ 180k miles. Burns quite a bit of oil, rattles for a second on cold start, and was running rough between 3-4k rpm but @Mechanician suggested I plug the EGR and that actually smoothed it out quite a bit. Other than that it idles smooth and quiet and gets around fine. No knocking or anything like that.

Lots of carbon and metal flakes which are not magnetic. Not sure what’s going on inside this thing but if it blows up it’s not the end of the world.

The filter seemed to do its job. Pleat spacing was perfect all around. Not sure the ADBV was perfect as most of the oil drained out just sitting upside down for a couple minutes. Oh and the sticker fell off 😂

VQ35s around that model year could wear down the chain tensioner and the chain would start gnawing on the metal backing of the tensioner.

Nissan chain tensioner's have been an issue for several of their designs of that era. The 2.4L truck engines were notorious for them too. Burning oil & non metallic flakes probably piston wear but also, copper, lead, or brass wear. Have you done a UOA on this engine?

As expected, looks good. Adbv finding is notable though, most of the oil shouldn't drain out without cracking open an inlet hole or two while draining base down.

Thanks for c&p.

These are my go-to.

I honestly thought that the Fram Endurance was going to be my filter of choice for my Corvette but after reading all the bad stuff about it lately I’m going to use the Carquest Premium or NAPA Gold for the foreseeable future. It really is annoying how quickly things go sideways in the oil filter industry. Way too much cost cutting is happening. At this point in time it looks like there are way more bad filters on the market than there are good ones 🤔

This occurred to me too. It's odd.

People here have found manufacturing cuts in media done inaccurately.
A slew of such defects is uncovered and after a couple of months (to sell off that run) the problem is gone.

How long were the "PureOne" filters Top Dog?
Then it was a Fram's turn.
Now CarQuest is basking in the Sun.

While less common on the VQ35 than the 2.5L, Nissan engines of that era are noted for failing pre-cats/pre catalytic converters. One of the symptoms of that is excessive oil burning because of scoring of the cylinders from the pre-cat material being sucked into the engines. There's actually a bitog thread of VQ35 on 05 Maxima with that issue, complete with (no longer available) photobucket pics.

That said, ~20-year-old engine with 180k mi. still running, not much to complain about. Many 2.5L engines of that era with the pre-cat issue failed catastrophically far sooner.

Thanks for posting.
I’m jumping in late here as I just bought a CarQuest Premium #84356(AAP oil/filter bundle) for the Civic in my signature. Trying it for the first time however the one I bought doesn’t have the orange seal but does have the orange ADBV. I will have to look more closely at my filter to see what the differences are from the one poster here from OP “dbeau”. (y)

Nice, what oil and filter back in and on? Thank You

I had an ‘04 Altima 2.5S(QR25DE) that also had the dreaded startup rattle regardless of the filter & ADBV. I found that parking the car slightly lower(when possible)on the passenger side/oil filter side, that there was no rattle upon startup’s even after sitting for many hours and a day.
And too, after sitting for those long periods of time, letting the engine idle for a minute or so before driving off, would also eliminate that dreaded rattle that could often announce itself while driving down the road for those first few minutes.

CORRECTION/EDIT:
YES, my o-ring/gasket is orange
The center tube does have holes(not louvers)
and the filter that I bought does in fact look the same as what the OP[dbeau] has provided.

I have two CQ Blue 84356 that have a nitrile (black) sealing gasket but also silicone (orange) adbv. My date codes start in 23 (2023). Most anecdotes with 24 date code, now show silicone for both. I'm not concerned about the nitrile sealing gasket on the 84356, used them for decades with no issue. The filters are otherwise the same.

Note this post edited after seeing previous correction/edit.
