Carquest and MicroGuard oil filters

I noticed on my last order of Carquest premium filters that they were all marked made in China.
Got 5 different applications last week to fit the cars I maintain. I had thought these were either US or Vietnam.
I stopped at Advanced Auto Parts today to pick up some Carquest Premium 84356s for Hondas. They had three on the shelf and the boxes each said "See product for country of origin". Each filter showed "Made in China". I didn't buy any.

I called the AAP store and they had 16 total in stock, so I went back, looked through their stock in back, and found a dozen Made in Vietnam and bought them. The biggest difference seen is the seal is nitrile on the Made in China and silicon on Made in Vietnam.

I wanted to stock up on more Honda filters, as I'm going to start taking care of our daughter's Pilot and her CR-V, which our granddaughter will soon be driving. 😬

The store said their filters are in turmoil with losing the Fram brands.

Am I the only one who would love to have the Advance Auto Parts "totalgrip" filters back, for $2.99 each?

I went through dozens and dozens of those filters.

Yup, that’s what mine were. Box instructs you to look at the filter inside. I hope China made are same quality. I don’t want to have to change filters again. Thought I was set with the Ultras.

I may give up and use Supertech…….

They should still be made under PGI, which uses factories in all those Asian countries. C&Ps here show the quality seems to be pretty equal in them all under PGI.

please read before posting. this just scares other people. these filters are not restricting oil flow. no other OTS filter currently can match the carquest premium/microguard/premium guard EX filtering efficiency. you may be able to find a fleetguard or donaldson but chances are they don’t offer it for your application.
PPE makes a filter with 98% @20microns absolute and 50% @ 10 microns for the 6.4 hemi. It also has one of the highest dirt holding capacity filters made for gasoline engines, If you go to their website and look for a match you may be surprised by their efficiency. For some of their filters they are @ 98% @ 10 microns and lower and compare favorably price wise.

and if you watch C&P’s of said filters… surprise they’re PGI.

I like that we know who the manufacturer is and can compare PPE filters to others coming from that manufacturer.

Also, I’ve been considering whether to order the PPE oil filter for my F-150. When I looked at it vs. the O’Reilly’s MicroGard Select, the PPE filter is 128mm in height vs MicroGard at 104mm. So, 24mm taller (nearly an inch), or +23% taller. That’s a pretty significant difference, especially if the filters are otherwise similar.

Can't really count on the total media area to increase by the same factor. It depends on pleat depth and number of pleats, which can be pretty different. Only way to verify would be to cut them open and measure the media area for comparison.

WCW has done C&Ps of the PPE and verified that the media has more surface area, however the media did appear to be thinner and less efficient than MicroGard Select.

Thanks! That’s the PPE filer I was looking at but not the same MicroGard for my application. I may just stick with the MicroGard.

Which matching Puolators?
Several models that were for the same engine looked identical when cut open. Same center tubes, inlet holes and anti-drainback valves. Even filter media was the same material and length. Just asking because they seemed the same. Personally, I like both Purolator ONE and Carquest Premium filters.
