Carmax Appraisal

What's wrong with parents helping out their kids? At least Critic takes an exceptional care of this car, as if he paid for it.

I've seen plenty of spoiled brats, when I went to college, beat the snoot out of the cars they got from their parents, with no maintenance unless their parents paid for it. Most of the time these cars were not even washed and you wouldn't want to look inside. I don't think that's the case here, so the preaching seems more like jealousy to me.

I think it just depends on a particular car and supply/demand, as was mentioned earlier.

I dealt with them twice, and twice their offer wasn't that great. Once in 2001 when trying to sell a 2000 Accord. I ended up selling it on my own for more than what Carfax was offering me. Second time in 2010 when trying to sell a 2001 Jetta. If I remember correctly, Carfax wanted to give us $1200 for it. We ended up giving it in trade to an MB dealer who gave us $3000 for it, although obviously the dealer had more strings to pull since we were buying another car from him...

Plus, haggling with dealers is a nuisance. I've often continued driving the same car for two years longer than I expected because I was so turned off by the new car shooping experience. Things like dealers advertising cars and refusing to sell them for what they were listed at, claiming that they can't sell you a car without their dealer installed paint and fabric protection, or dealers who ignore you when you arrive on the new car lot quickly turn you off. It's often less of a hassle to just keep driving the car you have.

Seems like they gave you a fair offer. You can get more in CA on a Prius selling it private party. You can usually weed out the tire kicker's over the phone. People will either have cash or in this case, being that the car is over $20k, will meet you at their Financial Institution and hand you Cashier's/Certified Check if they are financing or taking it out of their account directly. Selling Private Party isn't all that bad when you're dealing with a relatively "expensive" used car. Now selling one for $7k-$10k private party will bring all sorts of people your way that will be a waste of time. Once again majority of tire kicker's can be screened over the phone before they come.

Are you planning on selling or did you get the appraisal for kick's?

My friend sold his truck to Carmax, they offered him $4,500 and it was probably worth maybe $5,500 retail.

For a G note it was worth not having to deal with the hassle, selling cars is a PITA.

I think Carmax is good. I sold cars for them for awhile when they first opened the Omaha, NE store. They are very honest and straight forward. Not too many dealers will just write you a check for your car. They don't always have the lowest price or the highest trade in value but at least they don't play games. It's definitely not for everybody, as some do like to haggle, but it is a nice alternative to a traditional car dealership.

Old roommate of mine bought his RX-8 from Carmax. He is a big car guy and was actually surprised at how easy it was, said he would consider doing it again. He also took their extended warranty.

Not saying I will. But if I do, the TRD parts are going to another priuschat member.

Is your dad ok with you getting offers on his car?
