Car scams everywhere

Yep, but all of the cheapskates still post fully functional, whole vehicles for sale on Craigslist in the "Auto Parts" section to avoid the $5 fee if posted in the "Cars and Trucks" section. It isn't entertaining to see a 2013 Tahoe listed for $14,000 in the "Auto Parts" section. I always wonder what kind of maintenance was done by an owner who is unwilling to spend $5 for a legit CL listing.
They do this in the motorcycle parts section too. I try to flag them all but I don’t think craigslist cares much.

Unlike you I don't have any extra $4k sitting around.
I wasn’t inferring anything it was a simple question. What’s your time worth. You could spend 50 hours looking and still not have a car.

Presumably the dealer has spent some amount of time at auction avoiding the worst specimens.

But hey. Keep chasing those Facebook adds. If you enjoy the chase then have at it.

I had a setup like that once. Drove from NJ to VA with a wad of cash, turned out he had someone coming at the same time, with a trailer. Was just trying to get a bidding war I guess.

I get it that buyers can be no shows, flaky, etc too. So you do need to keep more folks coming until the bitter end. There is some rationale to it as lousy as it is.
Years ago a guy tried that with me, bidding war- told him to f** off.

In NH no lemon laws privately AND you can be sold a vehicle costing thousands to register. My FB bargain buy $500 on the cheap with lights to pass inspection .
I keep an eye open for lots for cars that will come with a sticker and 20 day plates. But who knows how good that sticker really is--it's supposed to be the same inspection level across the state, but sometimes I think some shops are a bit more liement than others. Especially if they are the ones doing the selling... And then you still have to get it inspected in the next 12 months or so.

I'm not sure how many private sellers are open to you driving off to some shop an hour or two from them so as to do an inspection--not on some $5k hooptie that is getting close to the end. It's a great idea, but if you can't do the inspection yourself (and then any repairs) one is seemingly better off spending far more and getting more.

Notice the common denominator ? Total lack of common sense . Trusting a stranger , Etc.

A lot of car related things are scammy:
car buying
car selling
car repair shops (include car body shops here)
car accessories (this will increase your MPG, etc.)
car warranties (especially aftermarket). Include things like "lifetime" alignments and wheel balancing, etc. Road hazard tire "protection" that expires after 3years.
Deceptive car rental stuff.

Hmm, I wonder if one of the reasons people are keeping there cars longer is they just don't want the trouble. Easier just to drive what I have. Maybe take it to the same shop where I get ripped off a little occasionally but not too much?

People are keeping there cars much longer.

Bottom line - if buying and selling cars were easy, dealers would be out of business.
Everything depends on how much time, and effort you have to spend.
And how much that time, and effort are worth to you.

I would love to keep mine longer, but two accidents later, I had to replace a couple. The market is stupid. I wound up spending far more than I cared to, just to get something I could “trust”, and I fear the next one will be the same.

300k is the new 200k, but how the first owner treated it for the first 100-150k is so critical for the second. But because of a lack of vehicles on the market, everything used is priced like it has an easy 100k left.

So frustrating.

If it runs and drives it must be worth $10k, right? I know what I got...

This new pricing is for the birds.
Trickle down. Average car is $40K. 300K is the new 200K.

So 100K cars are $25K.

Anything that moves is $10K.

It seems the luxury vehicles are the best deal comparatively. You can now seemingly get a RX350 for the same price as a comparatively aged CR-V. Rav4 is more than RX350.

Crazy stuff.

Just a suggestion for anyone either buying or selling.

This has worked well for us for friends(the "we") and family(also the "we").

We talk to strangers. I mean, literally at times while shopping or visiting places, we approach people, strike up a friendly conversation and discover that there is a need to (1) buy a car of a certain type or (2) sell a car of a certain type.

We also talk to people in parks, walking around beaches, meeting places, picnics, gatherings, restaurants, waiting in check-out lines, more...

Has worked very well. No surprises and no regrets. Will proceed in the same manner going forward.

I wonder... normally I'd rule out the something like the RX350 because as it gets older, it has to cost more to fix, right? I mean, if I buy it with 150k on the clock and intend to go to 300k, would it cost more to repair than that RAV4 or CRV? Usually the underpinnings are similar but not always.

Your not wrong. But you never know whats going to break, and Lexus owners tend to take care of things. Most of the carfax I am looking at have complete service history. There also hopefully built a bit better.

But its a crap shoot either way for sure.
