Car insurance coverage question

So I maxed out all the coverages with Geico, staying at $500/$500 deductible for $67/month. That's the best rate I've ever had in my life. If I go down to a $250 deductible, it only raises by $3/month. Might be worth it for how often the windshield gets hit by rocks.

Call each and ask about glass breakage waivers. I recall having them with both companies you're considering. Basically had zero-deductible for repairs (quarter-size or smaller) and $100.00 deductible for replacement. This was separate from my $1,000 deductible on comp and collision.

Unlike you, I've only used it once...and that was in 2011 on my 2005 Caravan. I think my cars are rock-proof.

Have you gotten a quote from USAA yet?

Pretty much every insurance policy we have is through them with the exception of work sponsored programs.

Like most other companies, USAA's rates can be really wild depending on ZIP code and other factors.

I was stationed in southern Illinois (St Louis area) from 2015-22 before returning to Texas. I can tell you that USAA was totally non-competitive with every quote I received. I've been a member since 1998 and their premiums have largely been laughable for this no-ticket, no-accident guy and his wife. My current $600 per 6-month premium with Allstate was over $1,700 for the same coverage with USAA. Thanks, but no thanks.

There are separate threads on USAA, but in my experience the service and rates have markedly declined as they broadened the risk pool...and they've done so in a very deliberate and extreme manner. Remember that until the late-1990s they were only for officer personnel. They then opened up to NCOs, then to all military personnel. In the early 2000s they opened up to anyone with a DD214. And of course, family members can tag along. Pretty soon anyone who's seen a war movie will be able to join. So what's the point? The risk pool has become so diluted there are basically no savings to be had. And this is why we're always slammed with the corny commercials peddling the faux-patriotism.

Same thing with GEICO. When I first started driving in the mid-80s, my dad was a govenrment employee and we were able to take advantage of coverage with the Government Employees' Insurance CO. You had to be government-affiliated to join. Now it's the same garbage everyone else peddles.

I switched to Progressive after State Farm more than doubled my premiums this year. Shopped around and Progressive are the only ones that are still affordable.

But usually you get what you pay for - I highly doubt that Progressive will be easy to work with when something happens.

That's been my major hangup with a lot of these companies and why I continue to use USAA. It's always been very easy when repairs have been needed.

When that hit and run happened, and we tracked down the owner, their insurance was going to be a hassle. I just filed the claim with my insurance and they got reimbursement from the at-fault driver's insurance. My process stayed to what I'm used to, hassle free.

I have not. I haven't looked into them for a long time, probably 10-ish so years ago. I'll check it out and see their pricing.

I've been back and forth between Geico and Progressive for about 13 years now. I've only had one claim (not-at-fault) back in 2014 but they were fine with my choice of body shop.

Repairs are free but replacements in IL unfortunately requires the comp deductible.

I will famously say: I KNOW!!!
Where I live I’ve said repeatedly no registration is not a reason to stop a vehicle. Then it goes on to no license, no insurance, no inspection, limo tints.

I know for a fact this is not the entire nation as I’ve seen YouTubes where a person has been pulled over for expired tags and it escalates from there. The driver doesn’t simply drive off, as they do here even in an accident.

Yep. We won the Super Bowl.

@Pew FWIW, I would use a broker. That's how I do insurance. I tell them what I am looking for and my threshold of pain (deductibles, liability of funds etc...). Let them do the leg work. They will also make suggestions on coverage.

I've never done a broker before but truthfully I'm kind of leaning away from it, one reason is because I deal with account managers throughout the day with work so I don't really want to deal with another person to manage a personal account that stays status quo most of the time. A second reason is since I can get max coverage for $3 more a month so I might as well max it out.
