Car Deal Fell Through...

I believe I advised you in the other thread to wait for the 2011 model. Consider the fact that you were not able to buy the 2010 model now a sign that you should wait.

I would call the dealer that has the car and try to make a deal over the phone. I would ask to either speak to the sales manager or the fleet manager.

+1 I have done the entire deal on the phone with the understanding that if we come to terms on the phone they hold the car for 2 hours until I get there. You have to start the conversation by telling them you want THAT specific car today and you have the money/financing to pay for it on the spot.

Too many "sales imposters" at most dealers.

isnt this really a car your parents are purchasing for their use??? If so, they should be market savvy enough to know not to limit their choice to ONE color combo....if price and getting "a good deal" are priorities.Maybe they should consider a Saturn or Pontiac if they are looking for a fire-sale deal!!!!

+1 There is a Saturn dealer here with about 30 cars still sitting there...

Mike, get an Astra, you'll love it. You might get a loaded one for $14k or less. I can pull 40 mpg runs and it handles like CRAZY.

Are they slashing prices on the Astra yet ?

I thought Pontiacs and Saturns were gonna be on a blowout clearance pricing just to get rid of them.

Thats the only way they have EVER sold them, isnt it?

I went through the dealer trade route to get my 06 Pontiac Vibe. I went online first for quotes. My wife wanted a black vibe with the power windows/cruise/auto trans package. Apparently, to get that package, most vibes had AWD, or manual trans, or the more powerful 1.8 L engine. this pontiac dealership in Nashville was the only Pontiac dealer to have the color/options we wanted. I got a quote from their internet dept. Guy wouldn't bulge on price, said I got their best "internet" price. So we went to this smaller Pontiac dealer outside of town. test drove the vibe. said we wanted to know if they had a black vibe in stock or getting one soon. The guy checked on his computer and said we can trade for a black vibe with the options you want. sure enough, they traded at the original dealership I got an internet quote from. Our salesguy said the Nashville dealer owed them on a trade favor. I got a lower price than what the original dealer was asking for and I got a $500 GM conquest rebate that the smaller Pontiac dealer let me have that I didn't even know about. With my $2k GM card earnings on top of it. It was a mighty nice deal.

When I bought my Mazdaspeed 3 the salesperson at the dealer(Kings Mazda) asked me the color and options I wanted(in my case, none) and subsequently located a car at a dealer in Cleveland. The car was transported to Cincinnati via flatbed at no additional charge.
In contrast, my local dealer(Oxmoor Mazda in Louisville) wanted thousands over MSRP, refused to do a dealer trade, and wouldn't provide a test drive without a signed buyer's order.

In my experience, dealerships will refuse to make any sort of deal over the phone/email. If they do say that they can sell a car at a given price over the phone/email, they will give you some excuse when you walk into their store saying that they cannot honor it.

A few months ago I bought a new Chevy all over the phone with a dealer down in Cincinnati. Located the vehicle online and just cold called and asked for a new car salesman. Told him the story and asked about the car, mileage and such.....set the price and told him I'd be down the following day. I told him that subject to inspection and a test drive, I wanted to walk in and walk out in under a hour. We missed that deadline by about a half hour but otherwise it went great.

You can make a deal over the phone, just be upfront and honest with them. Tell them you are a serious buyer, will be arriving with check or good credit in hand and ready to drive away. Let them know, you aren't playing games and that you expect none in return. Let them know that if the price/car they have is right, you are a sure thing.

It definitely isn't my first experience with not having it my way, but trust me, having your dad make fun of you for being an utter failure isn't fun either.

2011 model? 2011 Altimas do not arrive until early fall, and I need a car before then.

I tried again yesterday and they basically told me to pound sand. These were their exact words: "We know we have the only white V6 Altima in the entire region. We know that if it doesn't sell this month, it will sell the month after-- we are in no hurry to sell it." So, forget them. Their loss.

Yeah, well, that's just the way my parents are. That's why we aren't in a terribly big hurry to buy. As for the Saturn, I thought about that today, but there are only two Auras left in the region and they are both stripped four-cylinder models.

Not necessarily. The deal on the Mazda 3 worked out fine for the most part, and it was all done through phone/e-mail-- from 400 miles away!

I am almost tempted to go out and buy something tomorrow. Of course, that would probably be a terrible decision for a number of reasons.

Critic, you talk of you buying a car...

So this is for you, not so you can get your parent's handmedown ?

I'm sure the dealers in CA were slobbering over this sales tax rebate that just expired. What is tax there, 9% or so?

IDK how Nevada compares or if you'd have any smog issues bringing in a new out of state car... you'd still have to pay CA sales tax BUT the dealer won't be padding the sales price to take advantage of the write off.

Look back last summer, there weren't that many good cash for clunkers deals because the dealers padded the deals, and customers were overly giddy.

Wait, wait, wait... you just declared this new car bug less than a week ago. Another will come along.

if you bring a car over from Nevada there are minimum mileage restrictions. you have to pay CA sales tax and have the vehicle smogged to get it registered.

I just checked the other thread. You were talking about the 2011 Sonata there. I did not realize you had changed your mind and wanted a different car.

Anyway, if you brought your Mazda from a dealership 400 miles away, why not do the same with the Altima? Call every dealership in the country, tell them you are too far away to visit and that you want to purchase a white 2010 Nissan Altima. Then proceed from there. It shouldn't be impossible for them to ship the car to you, although that will probably cost extra. If you contact enough dealerships and get them to undercut each other, you might be able to get them to absorb the cost of shipping though. As for getting them to undercut one another, have fun with that. In my experience with Toyota dealerships, getting lower prices from them is like pulling teeth. I do not expect Nissan dealerships to be much different. Maybe you could get some figures on a 2010 Honda Accord and use those in your negotiations.

By the way, why do you want a six cylinder engine? They are gas guzzlers. You would be financially better off with a four cylinder engine, both in the short term and in the long term. They cost more money at the dealership, they use more gasoline and they require more spark plugs. If you want more horsepower from the car, buy the four cylinder model, install an aftermarket turbocharger/supercharger in it and pocket the difference between that and the six cylinder model.
