cant get the socket on cartridge filter top

i had a sunfire but sold it to my mom and bought a G5...i had a 32 mm socket to take off cap, ( which is exact same on both cars) but filter cap is in slightly different place than sunfire so i cant get the socket on cap...i think i need a socket with less height...or a wrench which i am reluctant to do ... any comments would be welcome

Most automotive tool makers, make a socket just for this purpose, it retails for around $15. The newer ECOTEC's require this socket the ones built before this year don't require it.

My new [2007 Ecotec 2.2] is fine with a regular socket. Just loosen it up a bit then remove it by hand.

Yeah, like Storm said a special socket is available. I believe it is just really short.

My ancient 1 1/4'' socket works fine on my 02. It also looks like some of the filter sockets would work. It is a shame GM screwed up the great design of the 02.

Has anybody tried their bare hand? it doesn't need to be very tight.

I've used a pipe wrench over a towel so I wouldn't gouge the plastic cap. My 2.4 Ecotec has the plastic cover over the engine so it's impossible to get to with a regular socket like you said.

You need a low profile 1 1/4 socket: Lisle 14700

I got mine from O'Reilly Auto (they had one in stock), but Napa and Autozone said they could order it...

I think they're less than $10.
