Can't find G-05, what else?

For my '96 Volvo, I've been looking for Zerex G-05. I can't find any retailer that has any Zerex antifreeze in this area...Schuck's (CSK), Autozone, the local NAPA, the local independent parts store (no Pep Boys here).

What would be another good antifreeze choice for this car?

Get the equivalent "yellow" formula at a Chrysler, Ford, or Mercedes dealer.

Same stuff.

I use it in a Jeep. I am in the same boat; I had determined to adopt it as a universal fluid for all my vehicles. Then, Prestone came out with their "all vehicles" formula, and all shelf space for G-05 seems to have dried up.

Somebody must have it, but I don't know who.

Historically, Mercedes used the formula in Europe for years, then Chrysler (Daimler- Chrysler, of course) and later Ford now use it here. The colors are all a little diferent.

I "think" the Global stuff is the same as Go-5 but premixed with deionized water.

Anybody know for sure?

If necessary, buy it from a Ford dealer. It will probably be less than buying it from a Volvo dealer.

The Ford Motorcraft Gold (as G05 is labeled) is yellow toward gold in color.

The Chrysler G05 is orange.

Zerox G05 is nearly clear with a slight yellow cast.

If by "Global" you mean Prestone "all makes all models", no, it is not the same. It may be the same (except for color) as Prestone's Dexcool.

Peak has this "Global LifeTime" coolant that claims to be cure for all cars (similar to Prestone all makes). However, the guaranteed "LifeTime" protection, which requires you to follow vehicle's owner's manual for specified maintenance, is somewhat misleading. What it actually means is you can't leave the coolant in your car forever because you still have to change coolant according to your car's maintence schedule. Some marketing spin out of nothing.

There's a new Havoline brew in a gold colored jug labled "Havoline Custom-Made Antifreeze/Coolant". It's targeted specifically for recent Ford and Chrysler products. Their ad's in the October issue of "Road & Track" on page 29. I have no idea what's in it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a G-05 clone looking to steal the thunder from Zerex. (Competition's good at the retail level!)

Napa does carry the G-05, just bought some from my local Napa last week.

Napa's part number on it is: ZXG051

If one Napa doesn't carry it, try another one.

the local napa has ordered other stuff for me when i asked them to (valvoline synpower 5w40 when valvoline was giving a full rebate in 2004, glow plugs). i bet they would order the g-05 as well.

Unless the dealer is going to give you old fashioned green in a volvo bottle, Id suggest going to the dealer (or find a discount dealer online) and buy it from them.

Having done a minor cooling system repair this past weekend, I'm glad I passed over the Prestone all-makes and went with the store brand good old green coolant since something didn't sit right with me about the prestone, reading here, I'm glad I did not take a brand name over store brand.

Also from reading here, G-05 seems to be the safest choice if good old green is not available to use. Which by the looks of the parts store might be the case when I have to do a major flush 'n fill in a year and a bit.

What I did not come across is, do you treat G-05 the same as good old green in terms of mixing it? (ie 50-50) or does it require a different mix to be most effective? Does it behave similarily as good old green in various mixes (ie 60-40)? My primary concern is freeze protection if it makes a difference.

Since I was not looking for, or at G05 I didn't look at any jug. I was looking for good old green, found some and finished my job.
I then started looking at BITOG to see whats up... it is a messaage board afterall dedicated to automotive vital fluids. My aging memory seems to recall something about dexcool being available only in a pre-mix solution, no harm in trying to find out some more info about g05, it certainly didn't come up in any related messages I had looked at.

50/50. The jug would've told you that had you bothered to read the chart on the back. That's the standard recommendation for any brand antifreeze concentrate. No matter what you decide on, they're all ~95% glycol (whether ethylene or propylene) in the jug.

That's simply not true. I can't state unequivocably that Havoline/GM DEX-COOL's not available as pre-mix, but it's definitely available in concentrate form. I'm confused about your objection to the Prestone-made "dexcool clones". I've had the SuperTech version in my Sonata for over a year now, and it's been virtually trouble free the entire time. I live close to the outer fringes of California's Mojave desert, so I see more than my fair share of 100+ degree F. temperatures. It's cool, today, though - at 2:50 P.M., it's only 96 degrees in the shade...
