Do any of you ever eat the inexpensive canned salmon and think it tastes OK? I used to eat it and liked it but lately it seems like either it's taste changed or my taste buds have changed.

I bought some cans of the more expensive Red Sockeye Salmon and it's really good - tastes the way Salmon should.

What's up with that cheaper canned Salmon? It seems to taste yucky and has a fishy flavor that I cannot seem to appreciate any more.

I never tried canned salmon but usually buy the frozen hamburger type salmon patties at Costco that taste pretty good.

I use it for salmon patties and it tastes great.

But there definately is a difference in some of the different distributors.

Just like the other day for some reason my wife bought a store brand canned albacore tuna, I did not know this at the time but I made my sandwhich at work and threw it away thinking it was bad.

Atlatic salmon is all grown in fish farms, it is not natural. The conditions are horrible.

Also, salmo is pink because of the algae and foods it eats. There is a Chilean salmon that is more available and cheaper, but white. To meet market demand, they color it with something to make it pink...

Any of these things could effect flavor.

It's all about the variety. Overprocessed, past prime canned keta can be fishy. I will eat it sometimes though.

But better, fresher types are OK canned.

I thought I had a bad brand of canned salmon at one time so I bought other brands, most around the $2.25 per can price range but they still seemed to taste not too good, even though it's wild salmon. The Red Sockeye canned salmon I bought is around $4.25 per can.

I definitely wouldn't want to eat any farmed salmon after reading it can contain PCBs.

I prefer the red but buy the pink because it's cheaper, there's some variation can-to-can. I buy Deming's brand and don't let my wife get it because she'll find some super-cheap brand where the fish seem like they died of old age.

In the late 1970's some of my buddies moved to Alaska and got jobs in the fishing industry in Petersburg, AK. One told me after working in the canneries he'd never eat canned salmon again.

Yeah,I never ate the canned salmon but I wonder if the frozen patties are any better.
The patties are tasty,though.

I know what you mean about it tasting like the fish died of old age. It reminds you of seeing all the dead salmon in rivers after they spawn. I hope they aren't using these dead ones.

Back in the 80s and 90s I bought fresh wild salmon often and it wasn't too expensive IIRR but these days it seems to be very expensive, like $10-$15 a pound, which is probably more than I can afford to pay for protein.

It's very nutritious though and that definitely attracts me.
