Canceling Toyota care

What would you guys do? I financed Toyota care till 85K. I’m on the fence on canceling it. My current plan is change the oil every 5K then have the dealer do the 10K. I’ve already had the dealer leave my skid plate loose and a bolt missing. Every time I leave I do a general walk around. Hence the reason I found the skid plate loose. Is it worth keeping? I personally don’t mind tinkering within my ability. I just need a stronger floor jack for tire rotations. I personally maintain all the vehicles in my sig. I gives more reason to go to a thicker oil, lol. I’m currently I’m almost to 15K and I’ll do the oil change myself. Take it in for the tire rotation. Other than oil changes and tire rotations. It pays for the spark plug change at 40K. Why 40K who knows.

Why not talk to sales person that sold you the policy.

In regards to the missing bolts, I would contact the service advisor and stipulate your unhappiness w/ how the work is been done.

Make friends w/ an advisor, we some good guys and some bad apples

I never even used my free oil changes. It's just too much of a hassle. Spark plugs on a Toyota 4cyl are easy peasy. If this is for the Tundra, and its engine issues, and possible difficult spark plugs, I'd keep the Care package.

If it were me, I would cancel. Extended warranties are sometimes worth it, but generally are a huge profit center for companies for a reason. Most of the time the warranties don’t have to pay out much. That’s not to say warranties are “bad”, just that if you are disciplined enough to pocket the money and set it aside, you will be ahead.

Missing bolts on the skid plate?

That was part of Toyota care for me. Every time I went in, they managed to misplace something.

Bolts missing on the skid plate when they change the oil, bolts on the bumper missing when they did a recall.

It’s good thing I keep extra bolts around, because every time they touched the Tundra, it came back to me with fewer parts.

I was wondering if perhaps I was alone.

Oh what a feeling!

Yeah one was missing and the rest were loose. Luckily I caught before I left. They took it back and installed the bolt and tightened everything up.

If you need tire rotations, IIRC Americas Tire will sell you lifetime rotations for $23/tire (or at least that was the price the last time I checked). I don't know how far beyond 15K your OEM tires are going to go, so you might just ride those out, if they are close to replacement depth, and then get a rotation package with your new tire installer, or even go to AT--they will do lifetime rotations even if you didn't buy the tires there. AT will also do a one-time rotation for a lower price, if you want to stretch out the life of your current set a bit longer.

On my newest Toyota, I just asked them to give me the oil, filter, and drain plug gasket, since I had already paid for it in the price of the vehicle. They agreed and did so, when it was coming up on 1 year old, and then 2 years old. They likely wouldn't have gone for it, if I hadn't worked with the manager when I worked at a different Toyota dealer years before.

If they hadn't agreed, I would've just not used the ToyotaCare. The last thing I wanted was some lube-tech hack over-torquing and/or stripping fasteners, or leaving them out altogether.

When my wife had a 18 Camry, she bought toyota care. At 45k miles, I took over the oil changes. This was the last oil change: oil everywhere, they used a non oem nylon washer which cracked in half leaking oil everywhere. Oil was just above the "add" mark, I knew something was wrong because this car never used a drop of oil. Shes lucky the engine didnt blow. Never again, my wife was shocked. They did do a 5k OCI which was interesting, since they prescribe 10k/1yr officially. The biggest hacks usually perform the oil changes, so anything you do will be 100000% better work. Especially at "lower" end dealerships.

If you want to pay someone to do it, take it somewhere where you can watch them or a trusted local shop that will take your parts/oil and just charge labor.

I had Toyotacare for 5/60K - Southeast Toyota forces everyone into it here.

One time they left one flap of the air filter hanging out - it ruined the air filter / gasket. I didn't find out till I got home. I didn't bother complaining, I was trying to stay friends at that point.

Another time they said they changed the oil but didn't. I complained and then they said since I only drove 5000 miles that I didn't need it. I said its been 12 months which manual says it does and b) why say on the service order you did? No answer but they clear they were not pulling it back in. Took it home and did it myself.

Another time I wheeled in and they immediately said it was time for a $150 alignment. I said "does ToyotaCare cover it", and they said no. Said I guess I don't need it.

Grifters IMHO.

Having said that, if your going to pay the dealer to do the plugs at 40K, then you might consider keeping it. Depends on your objectives.

In Canada the Costco price includes rotations and repairs for the life of the tires. They do a good job too.

wow you're too nice.

If you can get in the place, at least around here unless you get there right when they open you're waiting around all day.

I'm on the getting and keeping the factory warranties these days. Maybe not what the dealer is offering and most likely not an aftermarket one. My Sequoia when I had it, father-in-laws Renegade and my Pilot now we got the warranty on line from a different dealer. They were all 1/2 price or less of what local dealership wanted and some of them were aftermarket not even factory.

The electronics issues and other motor issues on almost everything these days is sad. I'm probably one of the few that actually benefitted from getting the warranty on all 3 vehicles and I used to hate getting them.

It's not a warranty. It's prepaid routine maintenance.

I’ll find out how careless they were in a few weeks when I do my 15K.

I’d keep it and just check on things afterwards. I’ve never purchased the Toyota Care package but do use the dealership for some things like alignments and such. The last time I took it there the tech left the air box unfastened. I didn’t check their work afterwards and I should have. Drove around with an opened air box for a while. Nothing happened but it was annoying.
