Canadian oils vs. US oils ?

So I recently found out that Canadian spec motorcraft oils are made by Esso. Which means that for the past several years I thought I was being loyal to ConocoPhilips. The Motorcraft oil is actually rebottled Mobil Super 5000(or 1000 if your cdn).

For my next OCI I'll be using up a case of Petro-Canada supreme 5w20 API SN. Figured I would buy local oil that is good stuff.

I'm really intrigued though with Pennzoil conventional for its high TBN and moly count. Plus it's easier to get as everyone carries it. I could even stock up web it's in sale! But... Is it the same as the US spec oil? Or is it rebottled in Canada too? An maybe not as good like I found out with my Motorcraft oil?

Any other oils that are different as well as soon as you cross the border?

We are still getting SM version of Mobil 1 0w40 & 0w20 but member Patman recently found SN in the 20 flavour . I know Castrol is bottled & distributed by Wakfield in Canada, not sure about refining, so it may differ from US specs. I believe SOPUS products come up from the States but I'm not sure and I don't have any Pennzoil bottles left around.

I'm pretty sure Pennzoil is Pennzoil.

It's the house brands like Super-tech, Canadain Tire, Motorcraft, Mopar, etc that are not actually blended by the brand that I think would be different as you found out with Motorcraft.

I always bought my oil from the GM Dealer. Despite everything costing more at the Dealers their motor oil was actually reasonably priced.

The GM Dealer I bought from used AC Delco motor oil. It was relabeled Petro-Canada oil at that time. Earlier this year when buying some I noticed the jugs had changed. Comparing the jugs to others it was obvious the oil was now relabeled Esso oil. Looking up the MSDS confirmed that for me. I didn't do that research at first so for a while I thought I was supporting Petro-Canada Motor oils when in fact I was supporting Esso brand motor oils. Nothing wrong with Esso brand oil of course but I developed a loyalty to Petro-Canada motor oils so I now buy it from the Petro-Canada gas stations. It's higher priced of course so that's a bit of downer. I hope to in the future find a Petro-Canada dealer that maybe sells it in the bulk and hopefully sells it cheaper.

Petro-Canada Supreme motor oil is great stuff. It'll serve you well.

The best 20wt oil deal in Canada is the Mobil made Toyota 0W-20 at $5.70/L. So why even bother with a dino when you can get a synthetic 0W-20 so cheap, particularly in the Edmontone where I understand you're still in the depths of winter. And the fact that it is also one of the best 0W-20 oil available at any price is just a bonus.

I did try the Petro-Canada website. Unfortunately I still haven't heard back from them a month later. I will of course try again. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Hmm. I never considered a Toyota 0w-20. Synthetic would be nice too at that price. I'll have to check the dealers in the area. I would have expected that to cost twice as much! By the time I'll be ready to use it though it will be getting closer to next winter. Just in time to try out that winter rating.

I was often wondering about that too, for instances, the M1 SM version 5w30 in Canada was A1B1/A5B5 (I recall only A1/B1 in US?), the Valvoline Maxlife ATF and Honda ATF-DW1 also lable "synthetic based" on the bottles, but I did not see these on the US bottle. I also recall the "GC" first being spotted in Canada. the SM Castrol Syntec 5w30 also says something about GM4718, now DEXO1. maybe they are differet after all?

Just checked with my local Toyota dealer. Their 0w-20 costs $5.70 a liter for a full synthetic. By comparison my Petro-Canada Conventional 5w20 oil cost me $5.21 a liter. So once my case of oil is up I may have to visit the Toyota dealer. Maybe I can push my OCI to 15000km on my 2007 H-D F150 5.4 and my 2006 Ford Escape 3.0 with the Toyota oil.... ?
