Can we please stop it with sequential turn signals?

Those flashing brake lights are usually a dealer-installed option on new cars. In other words, the cars did not come from the factory that way, but the dealer actually modified the car before sale, which raises some interesting questions about legality, warranties, and automaker permissions.
I know of no instance where a flashing CHMSL is factory-installed.

It was a cheap "safety" add-on that dealers slapped on every car and put on their addendum sheets.

Technically it is not legal. The only lights that are allowed to flash (automatically, without the driver moving the switch back and forth) are turn signals and 4-way blinker.

Flashing brake lights suggest that the pedal is being pressed only very lightly thus there is not an urgent need to slow down.

I am going to go with my hunch that they are against the code in every state. They don’t come on new cars, and very much seem to be the purview of the gang, thug, hood, Fast and Furious crowds.

I remember the mid sixties Mercury Cougars having the first sequential turn signals I had ever seen. The Cougar TV commercials at the time likened it to the Cougar twitching its tail. Sequential, red, amber doesn’t bother me at all. What does bother me is seeing the brake lights light up 5 seconds and the driver half way through their turn before the turn signal starts to blink.
Okay, those were cool.
