Can we please stop it with sequential turn signals?

It’s played out. Way back in the day, when the Mustang (and I presume a couple others) used them, it was actually impressive how they functioned. It was very analog but it worked. It was clever.

In the last few years, it seems like many/most of the higher-end vehicles have them. So much so that they aren’t unique or cool anymore, to me at least. I know that everyone copies each other and these things happen.

What else annoys me about them is that they are harder to read. I’d rather see a slow flashing bulb/LED (preferably amber) to indicate turn signals.

What does it say about car culture, when the biggest development that automakers work on for new vehicles is how fancy their decorative LEDs are?

The car-buying public appears to be willing to buy any egg-shaped SUV as long as it has Apple Carplay and really exquisite LEDs.

otherwise if you are one of the 50% of cars (exaggeration) that have 1 out of 3 brake lights working
I cant tell if its a blinker or a brake for a couple seconds

The flashing 3rd brake light is super annoying when people brush the brake pedal constantly going down hill or following too close.

I hate the auto turn stalks on my F-250. Rather annoying that they do not snap into place.

Stores can pull the turn signal bulbs off the shelves in Florida, hardly anyone uses them.

I had a 1981 Chevy Citation, well actually I had three of them, one had what was called the euro turn signal package.
The turn signals lens were orange instead of the regular red.

We have that on our tiguan and i want to disable it!

We dont have the turn signal tho, just normal front yellow blink and side mirror blink.


On some cars they do look cool but i think it does its job to catch your attention. Most mustangs rear turns look nice.

I agree with your wife.

I also do not believe they meet FMVSS 108 standards which say brake lights are to be solid lit - aka these strobes are illegal. If LEO would hand out a few tickets that would be the end of that.

They are specifically legal in Maine and I hate them. It's slightly understandable on a lone country road, catching someone's attention for the first braking event in a dozen miles.

But in traffic, when someone is on and off the brakes every second, it's chaos. And when all the cars have them, it will be sensory overload.

The gizmos that do it are $2 on alibaba and I'm sure dealers charge $495 for the platinum safety protection package.

I believe the first application of sequential rear turn signals was on the mid-sixties T-bird. It was cool when it was unique and became less so with more common use. They're everywhere these days.
The problem with the blinking center high mount stop lamp is first, it is not permissible under federal standards, and no state can override that and that the whole notion of some low-level employee hacking into a vehicle's wiring to install the enabling device would disqualify any vehicle from my consideration.

Maybe I’m the odd one out here but I never liked them even with new. I remember seeing them on a new mustang and wondering why someone bought a set of cheap taillights off Amazon to put on a brand new mustang

There's too much flashing going on while driving. At times I feel overwhelmed with too much input. On a multilane boulevard at night I almost missed a red light because there were too many lights to negotiate in my field of vision.

It's like the beeping you hear from electronic devices in some places.

I remember the mid sixties Mercury Cougars having the first sequential turn signals I had ever seen. The Cougar TV commercials at the time likened it to the Cougar twitching its tail. Sequential, red, amber doesn’t bother me at all. What does bother me is seeing the brake lights light up 5 seconds and the driver half way through their turn before the turn signal starts to blink.
