Can we just randomly mix oils and it will become slighly thicker?

Mixing oils,

The Jetta has a 504 spec I believe we use the blue 5w40 LiquidMoly
The Tiguan has 508 spec and we use the silver 0w20 Liquidmoly.

Now both engines are out of warranty. And i've been doing a good job of 4-5k miles per change. I've noticed the Tiguan is normally .5 quart low and many of on GTI forums say to ditch 0w20 for the 5w40 because its purely for MPG. The manual i believe, says we can use 1qt of 504 spec if need as top up and thats what i've been doing.

I'm thinking of trying to with a 50/50 mix of 5w40 and 0w20 to see if oil consumption goes away. Am i making like a weird blend of 2.5w30 or does it not work like that? I figured the people here have way more experience and knowledge VS the GTI forums.

In the grand scheme of these engines, half a quart per OCI is really good. I'd run the 5W-40 by itself before mixing blends, unless you know for fact the additive packages are the same.

I wouldn’t mix them. There no harm in using a heavier oil, in fact it’s better. I use a 504 00 oil in my Tiguan that recommends 508 00, and on occasion I’ve used 5W-50. It’s fine.

Oil cocktails are a tossup. You may end up with a perfect middle of the road blend, or you may end up with too much or too little of any addpack components. The properties of the final KV may also vary. If it's out of warranty I'd just switch entirely to 504 and sell/donate the 508 I had leftover.

I would use a higher quality 40 grade in both. Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum Euro. Always had oil consumption with the low quality bases LM uses. 0w20 or mixing doesn't help.
