There was a second stalk behind it that reached the ceiling but dried up over the last year, and a few days ago fell over taking out this small stalk with it. It's hanging by a few threads. If I prop it up with some sticks, will it heal back together? If I cut it at the break and stick it in the soil, will it grow? Will a new shoot grow from the stump?

P.S. what is this thing called?

My wife has had good luck with a fresh cut up the stem, a bit of root tone on the cut and into a pop bottle for a week to grow some roots. I dont know about these ancient "grasses" though.

It might grow from the stump. Give it a few weeks if you have the time.

It's free to try! I would keep the stump as is and get a small pot for the upper, broken part. Fresh razor with small cuts quarter inch up the stalk; put in room temp water with pebbles not dirt to support it. Keep it that way for a bit watching it. If you get any roots then replant. Percentages aren't the best but it could take.

My grandmother had plants like these. When they would get too tall, she would snap them into pieces and stick them in water. They will eventually grow roots. When the roots look pretty healthy you can plant it again and it will keep going. Also if you leave the stump and keep watering it, it will most likely pop out a new plant next to that stump. Not all plants do this when broken, but pretty sure this one can. Worth a try anyway.

No root rot from overwatering ?
No problem.
Spray the stump daily with low dose foliar feed liquid fertilizer in water.
Dr. Earth Liquid Solution.
Also.
Apologize to your plant.

No, THIS is a spider plant:

And it's rootbound (hence the "babies")
Yours is also rootbound and has the wrong type of soil. It's a tropical plant for sure, so a sandy soil, sold in stores for succulents or citrus would be better. Try replanting it and getting it into fresh soil. Probably will need to seperate the two root systems if you can. Also needs a little bigger pot.
