Hello everyone and I would like to say that I love this site. My question is this: I have a 2000 pick up (V8) and I am using Mobil 1 5W30. I have aprox. 18,000 miles on it and hardly gets driven. Can I keep this oil in it for one year? I don't drive much and am worried that the oil will maybe go bad or lose it's properties? I have another truck that is my daily ride, thats why the miles is low. Thanks.

Sounds fine to me. A lot of standard manufacturers' recommendation time limits are a one-size-fits-all solution based on the idea that your car is going to be regularly driven. I'm not sure if the filter is going to last that long though. Maybe change the filter every 6 months?

Why don't you do an oil analysis with a TBN (total base number) test after a year and compare it to some of the virgin oil analysis results.

Absolutely -- you can leave the oil in for years without any serious ill effects.

Search the UOA section for someone with an infrequently driven Porsche who left the oil in for 5 years. The oil was still fine.

Thanks alot guys. I enjoy changing my own oil but on this truck the oil filter is a bear to remove and the oil is pricey. I was hoping that once a year would be OK on a vehicle that barely gets driven.

Switch to Esso/ExxonMobil XD-3 0W30 if the cost of the oil is a problem.

Half the cost of Mobil-1 5W30, and better cold-weather, startup, and high-temp. protection. Full synthetic as well, just like Mobil-1.

Mobile 1 should be fine for a year because it is a synthetic and does not build up acids like a dino. I would not leave a dino oil in that long, maybe six months. Just my opinion.
