Can I extend OCI using Mobil 1 0w40?

Hey guys, I have a 2006 dodge caravan which has been seeing 8000km ocis using conventional oil. Right now it has Pennzoil Conventional 5w30 and it's almost due for another oil change. I happened to get a deal on some Mobil 1 0W40, I got 24 liters for around 90 bucks, which works out to a bout $3.75/liter. I'm thinking of putting this oil in the engine next oil change. By the way the engine is 3.3L and doesn't use a drop of oil between oil changes. How long can I keep that oil in there?

Right now I'm running the conventional oil for 8000km with about 80% city driving and the rest hwy.

You could easily do 8,000 miles or 12,800 KM, maybe more. Run an extended drain and get a used oil analysis to find out better

In most engines 10K miles is no problem with any Mobil 1 oil.

Where in Canada do you live? What are your driving habits? What does you manuel say regarding what oil you should use (i.e. 5w20, 5w30)?

I would be a little concerned.... especially if you live in the colder areas of Canada (except the west coast).....in using a 40 oil in the winter months....

He's right about the 40 weight, but M1 shears down to a 30 real fast abording to the UOA around here. Great oil, and I would use it without thinking twice. One year or 10,000 miles

I definitely think 10-11k miles would be no problem with that oil.
Spending the money on a used oil analysis is probably worth it at 10k miles.

Might as well use Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30. The 0w-40 shears down to a 30-weight quite quickly and it's cold flow properties aren't much (if any) better than the 5w30.

Doesn't matter if it is a 40 weight or how much it shears for a colder climate. That is hot weight. It is still a 0w in the cold and will flow great. Run it for 10k miles and do a used oil analysis. Based on the results you could probably up it to 12k or higher all year round.

Mobil 1 0w-40 is a better oil than Mobil 1 5w30.

Those are great engines, I do not imagine your Caravan will mind the 40 weight unless you are constantly driving it like a race car which is not likely. I worked at a Dodge dealer in a town where you have the old folks stuck in their ways of " My cars always ran only on 10W40 and this one will too". Had one always come in with over 300k on it and it ran fine. I would use the Mobil 1 without hesitation.

It just amazes me... first.....there was no response to the above questions....second...how almost everyone, not knowing the driving habits (i.e. mostly highway, stop and go, short trips etc/) and weather conditions...what the manufacturer recommends.... can say OK to this oil (0w40)... and say it can go 10 to 12K.

My guess..... the recommended oil is either 5w20 or 5w30. Just because he got a 'good deal' on a 0w40....does not mean it would be the best choice for his vehicle.

Oregoonian has it dead right. Without knowing his driving habits, no one can tell him that he's good to go for 10-12K. We have seen some pretty potent synthetic motor oils destroyed in less than 5000 miles due to frequent very short trips. OTOH, with daily trips of greater than 15 km, it is possible to go 10,000 - 15,000 km with conventional or synthetic blend oil.

I would recommend that the OP do a used oil analysis after 8000 km and adjust his OCI based on that.

Good point driving habits, extreme driving conditons etc are to factored in. Including the capacity of the engine sump is also a key factor.

UOA is perhaps the best way to go if in doubt.

Possibly the original poster could answer that question as well.

Without all the other questions answered....no one can say if an 0w40 is a suitable oil... and guess at a proper OCI.

IMHO....an 0w30 might be a better choice....especially if he live in the colder areas of Canada (not the west coast.).

I run Mobil 1 0W40 in my Explorer and Cavalier and the engines have not blown up yet. I am betting your engine will run fine on this oil. And yes, I know that he lives in Canada and I live in North Carolina.
