Mobil 0w40 x3 vs 0w40 FS?

Usage will be for a 2018 718 GTS, a 2020 C63, and a 2023 Golf R.

I was originally planning to use Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 0w40 for all 3 but I'm reading X3 0w40 is a better oil all around? I'm not particularly concerned about warranty since I've never heard of a dealership doing oil analysis on a warranty claim unless it was egregious service history.

All 3 cars see some track time every year, mostly the Golf R.

X3 or X4?

If I didn't have a GPF I may lean to FS, but either way I'd say both are excellent oils, probably the best of the off the shelfs, and will protect the engines more than adequately.

We use the X4 in the '24 Carrera T.

You just can't beat what that FS provides but for certain applications the X4 makes sense. The x3 is not the latest version as already mentioned.

What about Valvoline Restore and Protect?? 😏😏
Sure, put the tracked euro motor on an oil with even lower HTHS than required.

When they "Protect Emission Systems', do you think they also might mean valve deposits?
Not exactly. VW 504 approval has a specific test that limits valve deposits, but this doesn't mean that it will eliminate them, just slow their development. VW 511 is very similar to 504, essentially just allows for 40 grades, so it's likely that it will also be better than a full SAPS 502 in that regard, but I haven't seen the list of tests for 511.

In general, if you aren't concerned about adhering to the letter of the warranty, ESP X4 would be an excellent choice, though I have seen very power-dense EA888s run FS without a problem. And I would stick to FS if you're on ethanol, higher TBN is preferable to handle the acidic byproducts, but X4 should technically have slightly better viscosity retention. Honestly if the motor isn't tuned or on e85, ESP 0w30/5w30 would be perfectly fine as well, but I completely understand using a 40 grade for peace of mind.

Here is a similar thread in the European and Import Motor Oils forum:

If the cars have cat. converters 0W-40 X4 should be better. It was recommended for the Prosches, however according to the video I posted in the thread above, Porsche is moving away from 0W-40 X4 and now recommending C40 GT W-40 instead.
The FS 0W-40 may do something to your cat. converters, but that only might be if you have excess oil consumption.

X3 0w40 .
but isnt it replaced with X4 0w40? thats a good oil too.

No, it means lower levels of SAPS.

Metallic additives (SAPS: sulphated ash, phosphorus, sulfur) produce ashy and/or corrosive deposits when burned. Over time, in theory these deposits will plug and poison catalysts.

IN reality, it's on relevant now because we've turned so many modern engines into oil guzzlers. Rather than use oils and OCIs that prevent turning engines into oil guzzlers, they decided to make the oil safer for the emissions system to guzzle.

If your engine doesn't turn into an oil guzzler because you are a BITOGer who is up to speed, then full SAPS levels will not destroy the catalysts until many hundreds of thousands of miles-well beyond the rest of the car failing.

For my C8 I'm using FS now that it's approved. My guess FS is very good
It is, this has been proven many times.

What I'd like to find is the elusive 5w-50 Euro FS. THe 0w-40 is great oil, but practically speaking at 3.7 HTHS and with the known shear to 30 grade, I'd prefer the Euro FS formula that holds a bit higher KV100 and HTHS.

Supercar 5w-50 is out there. I think HTHS is 4.3.

Porsche is not moving away from X4, the C40 GT is for specific cars only; GT and other HP cars. Other 911s, 718s still require C40, the current X4 oil. Will they? Who knows, but they are not now.

From Porsche:

"Mobil 1 C40 GT 0W-40 is required by Porsche for the following models:
• 911 GT3 (991 and newer)
• 911 GT3 RS (991 and newer)
• 911 R (991)
• 911 Speedster (991)
• 911 S/T (992)
• 718 Cayman GT4 RS (982)
• 718 Spyder RS (982)
Mobil 1 C40 GT 0W-40 is not suitable for Porsche vehicles requiring an A40, C20, C30 or C40 approved Mobil 1 engine oils. "
