Hello to all and a good Thanksgiving,

My brother and I have a spat! I'm heading to Arizona in a couple weeks and my first OCI for my 08' Impala SS is due in about another 1500 miles. He says change the oil for the trip and forget the "Oil Life Monitor".

What you guys say about that??????

On my brothers Cadillac he does about 3K once per year so he has the dealership swap his oil every 6 months using Castrol "Syntec".

Go by the OLM.

If your oil reaches it's EOL, your engine won't blow up, it will cause increased wear and operating temperatures (that is WORST case scenario though). If you're worried, change it - peace of mind and enjoying the trip - heck, for the 30 minutes it takes do it.

If its the very first oil change I'd do it now.New engine and such.From then on follow the OLM.

Thanks for your super fast replies!!!!! What I want to do is change the oil out after I return from AZ. Then my intention is to change over to a synthetic like "Syntec" and be done with it for another 6K.

It can't hurt to change your oil at 4500 miles, but you shouldn't have to. You have a modern engine, modern oil, and a modern OLM. I'd feel comfortable with just letting it do its job. Temperatures should be fairly mild this time of year anyway, which is good.

Does your brother do a lot of short trips? If so, his 6 month/1500 mile synthetic oil change isn't too unreasonable (although I would probably go one year). However, if you drive your car regularly and show it some highway miles, you don't have to follow that kind of schedule at all.

My brother only travels 12 miles daily so since his car specifies a synthetic the dealership options to use Castrol "Syntec" instead of Mobil 1 which is strange too me.


Isn't Mobil 1 a standard part on the Corvettes?????? I'd think they have it already canned in over the counter GM part as standard. I mean guys why would they use CS instead???

Oh well, When it's time for me I intend to take mine to the Cadillac dealership for future services cuz my Chevy dealership went bell-up shortly after I bought my 08" Impala SS this past May. Now I'm forced to have another GM place handle it.

Mobil 1 is what comes in it, but it's not required. Any oil that meets the GM specification will work (and there are a number of them out there).

Volvo recommends 7500 miles on conventional oil on my 300hp turbo motor, so sure why not.

Yeah, that does seem odd. I certainly wouldn't use Syntec over Mobil 1 in most cars, but that's just me...

They probably got it cheaper.

In all fairness, if it meets the specs that Cadillac requires, and if your brother drives mildly, I think it'll be fine.

Change the oil and filter now.
You have plenty of miles in the factory oil.

This is not absolutely necessary. I believe it is your best shot given the circumstances at this point.

Don't change it. IT can go 6k easy and a highway trip is not going to degrade the oil much at all.
IF it is factory fill my recomendation does not change at all. run it the full interval. This break in myth is like the 3k mile oil change.

if it's the SS model it has the 5.3 V8. That engine in my wife's Tahoe will use 10% of it's oil life for every 1100 highway miles driven at 75-80 mph with a 4.10 rear ratio- (70 mph is 2500 rpm- I would bet the SS probably turns 1500-2000 rpm @ that speed) so you should feel comfortable letting the change go until you return

my g/f car I just do "about" 50% on the OLM...that works out to be 5-6k

What kind of filter do you have? The filter is much more likely to have issues with a extended OCI rather than the conventional oil.
