Ram trucks had the Ram covered tail-lights and in the fog they were dangerous. You can't see the trucks until you're nearly on them. Bad news!

How do you defend stupid ?
Deliberately altering a safety device is a fools game. This was a hot button topic on another car forum. Probably a good 30% or so were for tinting the tail lights. It seemed like once a month or so the topic would come up and I'd have to shut the thread down.

Probably runs counter to DOT requirements for vehicle lighting. But it looks so cool ese.
My 79 trans am has darkened tail lights from the factory. They look really good on a black car. I think I'm going to try coating the side markers on the vette as an experiment.
It seems to be the wild west in lighting these days. Many headlights and tailights on stock vehicles are way too bright. More obtrusive than anything I'll do.

VHT niteshade is widely sold for this app, though, it sates for "Off-Road use only" so, that should tell you everything.

When I was in the insurance industry they were the devil.
We could deny coverage to an insured if they had tinted tail lights that may have been a factor in the accident.
Also, tinted tails were often connected to insurance scammers. People would get an older car, deeply tint the tail lights, then purposely pull out in front of you at night causing you to rear-end them. They would then attempt to collect damages from the accident.
Some of them were slick enough that when the auto appraiser went out to see the damaged vehicle, they would remove the tinted lights and replace them with normal ones. This was pretty obvious when the whole rear of the vehicle was smashed in but the tail lights were untouched.
Dash cameras are invaluable in these situations.

The "murdered out" look is pretty popular in the Twin Cities. I cannot fathom why people would want to purposely black out the front and rear lights, especially on motorcycles. It seems the lifted pickups (brodozers) crowd go with blacked out rear lights.
I have blacked out tail lights on my Grand Prix and my other past cars. If done right it looks real nice and the light shines through just fine.
Hate them.
The guy who had my 96 SL2 spray tinted the tail lights for some reason.. I had to go to the wreckers and find a new set to replace them. Threw the other ones in the garbage.

Dark tinted rear lights aren't a problem, excessive opacity is the problem.
