Can anyone here defend dark tinted tail lights?

Tonight I drove home behind a car that had these. No street lights, quiet residential area so hardly any ambient light.

You couldn't see the car unless something was reflecting off of it. Even when the brake lights were illuminated, it was only maybe 1/4 the intensity of a normal car without its brake lights on.

Who on earth would purposely reduce rear visibility??!

Nope, hate 'em.

The problem with VHT Niteshade too, is the amount of tint is variable since it's a spray on product. A lot of people seriously over do it.

Darkening lenses can look good on some modified cars in some situations, but usually it's a tacky mod and just looks bad, while reducing the output of the lights. Nothing like some way too dark, runny Niteshaded lights.

The previous owner of my green Ranger did that to some of the lights. Since the housings were already rough anyway, I used brake cleaner to get it off. Worked pretty good. The surface was tacky immediately afterward, but hardened up and looked fine later. I did that knowing I'd be replacing all the lights over time anyway. Try at your own risk.

No reason to defend them they are dangerous and stupid. Lets try improving the appearance of our car by making it a target for rear end collisions.

Agreed.
Then deliberately reduce the headlights to 20% strength with tint
and followup with putting in 100w hid bulbs.

The taillight thing is common between regular blackouts, people using limo tint.. and the spray stuff. 100% retarded.

Seen a guy with a dodge neon with fully clear taillights, and red bulbs in place of the brake lights.

Terrible I could barely see the little dot of the LED taillight.

Another guy with Florida tags with a dark smoke cover over his back license plate, and taillights smoked out. No reflection at all.

My sister thought it was cool enough that she took black spray paint to the headlights of her Ram. Yeah. Didn't work very well.
I was able to get it back to normal with the 3M kits. Ended up using one kit per side where normal one kit can do two.

It can make a car look better in some rare cases, but if I was to go that route, I'd rewire and put in much brighter bulbs. Not worth the trouble in any case, and doing when these people do is rarher dangerous. I vote against them.

I know what you are talking about, and I cannot defend it. It's easy enough to get rear ended with full intensity tail lights, why make them lass visible.

I have my windows tinted nice and dark but I would never put any kind of tint on any of my lights. I have seen a few kids in their ricer cars with them darkened around here. Never understood the point of it.

Depends on the coated bulbs.. some are only coated in certain locations and ok.

The fully blue ones are just terrible agreed... along with the purple green and other tinted bulbs.

And I'd say its not the same thing as spray painting your tail light lenses black.

One affects what you see(and possibly blinds others)... the other affects how people see you.

Tinted taillights on a dark rainy night are extremely dangerous.. esp if they are matched with a dark colored vehicle and a dark smoke license plate cover.
